Thad's Story
Life
After graduating with the class of 1990 I attended Colorado College and majored in Sociology. I read that it is always best to major in something where there are no right answers - gives you a wider margin of error. I've always found people more interesting than anything else so Sociology seemed a good fit. After college I decided I needed a job but dodged that bullet by going to medical school in Birmingham, AL.
I moved to Birmingham and graduated from medical school in 2000. I decided to specialize in psychiatry and after four years of psychiatric training graduated in 2005. Finally I had to get a real job. I set up my own private practice with a subspecialty in adult ADHD -I figured that since I managed to diagnose and treat myself - maybe I could do the same for others. Along the way I married Kim in April of 2005 (thank you Match.com). She got a younger man and I got good insurance benefits. We bought a house and are raising our cat in it (well, technically my step-kitty). So far the cat is letting us live there in some sort of indentured servitude contract I'm not allowed to talk about.
I really enjoy my work, it is scary to spend 8 years in graduate medical education and find out there is still so much you don't know. But even though I'm often frustrated, I'm never bored. I didn't imagine winding up where I am in my life right now, it took longer and a few more twists and turns than I wanted; but I found a place to carve out for myself and call a home.
