She earned a master of arts degree in lay ministries from Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut, and a doctor of divinity degree from Springfield Christian Bible Seminary Association in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Gilbert is the chief executive officer and founder of Pastoral Resource Ministries Inc. (PRM) and Pastor of The Living Word Worship Center (TLWWC), both of Bloomfield, Connecticut. Dr. Gilbert is a pioneer and mentor for women in ministry. In 1987, at the fifty-seventh annual Session of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Hartford, Connecticut, she was voted the organization’s first female president. In 1996, at the ninety-second annual Session of the Connecticut State Missionary Baptist Convention, she became the first female pastor voted into full membership of that organization. She was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award from the Greater Hartford Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club Inc. in 1997, the Significant Ministry Award from Hartford Seminary in 2000, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sons of Thunder Coalition in 2003, and the Martin Luther King Drum Major Award from the Greater Hartford Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance in 2011. Thelma resides in Bloomfield, Connecticut. She is the mother of two children and the grandmother of seven grandchildren. One of her favorite Scriptures is Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”".
