Theresa's Story

Life Worked as the Director of Career Services at i.c.stars, a Chicago non-profit that trains young adults 18+ in business, technology, and leadership, and assists them with finding a job after the 4 month intensive training. Serving as a mentor to women just out of prison. Work with National Cares Mentoring Movement, a national organization that connects African American mentors with organizations who need volunteers to mentor African American children: which Windy City Cares is part. We are looking for African American adults to mentor our African American at risk children Served as board president of a local non profit technology organization. Served as board member of local women or color organization. Original member and treasurer of 11 year old investment club that has done quite well despite the stock market. Also a Red Cross certified HIV/AIDS preventions trainer. Never married, although in a long term relationship. Love children and spend time with niece, nephew, and God children. Have been a supportive part of the lives on many children of friends and relatives. Parents retired and still live in house that I grew up in on the south side. Own my home and love to travel. I really enjoy cruises. Especially like to take quick 3-4 day get aways throughout the year. I am an music lover and a geek. I love music, computers, gadgets, and new technology. My tastes in most things are ecclectic, ranging from theater, music, poetry, books, or movies. To relax, I like to watch television, a movie, listen to music, or take a walk. My heroes are my mother, grand parents, grand aunts and uncles, and various other family members. Growing up in a segregated, separate but equaltime, I watched these people overcome the most horrific circumstances to make a better life for me and other family members. What they were able to accomplish through such dangerous times, makes me feel proud. There is nothing tha...Expand for more
t I cannot accomplish, if I put my mind to it. The two persons from my past who I'd most like to see again is my paternal and maternal grandmothers, because there is so much about each of them that I don't know. Plus I would like for them to see how their influences manifested in me. I love American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, and Jon and Kate plus 8. These are my favorite stress relievers. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the basement and add on a second floor. My dream home would be my current house with 2nd floor addition and a finished basement with central air, green technology for energy efficiency, and electronic technology to manage all aspects of the house. If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to friends and family, then spend the rest on starting my on international non-profit organization provides training and support to men and women just out of prison, prevention programs to keep young people from going to prison and send them to training and college, traveling the world and making dreams come true for people around the world. I'd also create endowments for i.c.stars. Centers for New Horizons, and Essence Cares/Windy City Cares. In 10 years, I hope to be retired, volunteering t organizations that I support. I'm going to get there by continuing to work and save. And maybe buying a lottery ticket every now and then. Karen and I met on the first day of 7th grade at Mt. Vernon. We were lunch monitors and I shared my chocolate chip cookies with her. We were best friends even though we went to different high schools and colleges. We have managed to stay in touch, speaking every couple of years. We saw each other this past weekend for the first time in more that 20 years. It was as if time stood still. We couldn't stop looking at each other. We have promised that we will stay in touch better than we have in the past. Karen and I are truly friends for life!!!
