Therese's Story
Tell us what you do:
I am RETIRED(!) since July 2014 from my last "gig," which was teaching functional living skills in an Adult Transition Program for 18 to 22 year old adults who have moderate to severe intellectual / learning / (behavioral) disabilities on a public high school campus in Elk Grove (near Sacramento), CA.
I also worked as an Adoptions Social Worker, and a VISTA Volunteer (Volunteers in Service to America).
Tell us about your family:
Besides my school learning community (I continue to substitute teach ~1 day/week), and fellow politically progressive activists, I have a 28 year old son, Rasik Cauchon-Desai, who is making his own contributions to making the world a better place.
I am close with my family and extended family.
Tell us where you have been:
I have lived and studied in Quebec, Canada, and Guadalajara, Mexico; worked in Germany, and on an Israeli Kibbutz; traveled in Europe, Africa, Mexico, and some of the United States.
Tell us what you do in your spare time (hobbies, interests, volunteer work):
In my spare time, I work to ...Expand for more
varying degrees on peace and social justice issues, the environment, ecological living, peace marches/rallies/RESISTing!, listen/dance to live music, especially blues, hike/camp, travel, learn and practice the foreign languages of my relatives (French, Spanish, and German), think out of the box, question authority, and strive to live "untamed."
I also enjoy reading and keeping myself informed about current politics.
Tell us some things on your bucket list:
Plant a kitchen and flower garden. Travel to India, with my son, to visit his father's family. Canoeing/kayaking down a river. A road trip, but by bicycle. Train and sailing trips to anywhere.
More travel/trekking to places known and unknown (Hawaii, Alaska, Cuba, Jamaica, Greece, Asia, China, Japan, Central and South America).
Tell us a story about your high school days:
I remember the first Earth Day organized in San Diego. Students were encouraged to ride a bicycle to school, if appropriate. Some of us rode bikes, and some of us continued to do so for the remainder of our years at Rosary, and beyond.
