Thomas's Story
Life
Recently retired from the Commerce Department, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
as the Chief of the Safety Division. Most recent accomplishment was being voted the
Federal Safety Professional of the Year for 1999, with an award given by Charles Jeffries, OSHA head.
I've been a practicing safety professional for over 40 years, earned two Certified Safety Professional's, also a full Member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
I live in Germantown, Maryland with my wife Mary Ann and two furry animals named Randi and Reese, both female pound dogs.
(Yes, a true German in Germantown, one of the fastest growing burbs in Montgomery County)
My brother, Jerry (Class of 61) lives nearby in Bowie, Maryland.
Military
Was drafted in fall of '67. Did good on tests and was assigned a Pershing Missile MOS. Ended up becoming a trainer in the Mi...Expand for more
ssile School at Ft. Sill. They offered 10K to reup in fall of '69 and get the E6. I did not take it since my feeling if I stayed in would have been that I would not make it out of the big green training aid.
After the Military
I received my first MS back at Central University of Missouri. My first civilian job was with the old Factory Insurance Association where I ended up as a senior fire protection engineer servicing accounts in a 5 state area; finally ending up as the state of Oklahoma field rep.
In 1974, I joined Sherwin Williams as a fire protection engineer and and was promoted to Director of Safety in 1981.
After getting an MBA, I joined the Pennsylvania Electric Company as Safety Director in 1985.
In 1996, I joined the federal government as Safety director of the US Mints. Since 2002, I've been the Safety Director of NOAA. Retired end of February 2010
