Thomas's Story
Life
Ah, life when you're in your 50s... the changes it can bring. Thought I'd go ahead and update my bio. I'll leave the previous PR bio version but I'll augment it with some personal stuff.
So, I'm still married but also still separated these 10 plus years. What was originally "for the kids" has become status quo and keeps me from impulsively doing something stupid... like marrying a fourth time! But having pretty much gotten the kids into adulthood I decided to sell the house in Arlington, VA and downsize.
Blythe, 21 is going to be in to her fourth year at Randolph College, previously called Randolph-Macon Woman's College, in Lynchburg, VA and Alexander, 19 is now a US Marine Corps Lance Corporal based at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC and heading to Ramadi, Iraq in November, 2007.
Updates 4/26/09: Blythe has graduated and after spending a month in New Zealand is back in home with her mother and looking for a job. She has a degree in Anthropology & Sociology. Alex has been back from Iraq since May, 2008. He was 60 yards from the 2,000 lb bomb explosion on April 22, 2008 when he lost his good friend Cpl. Jonathan Yale (receipent of the Navy Cross). Alex recieved a Tramatic Brain Injury that day and is currently undergoing numerous therapies to try to reduce his veritgo and migraines and to improve his memory retention. He is in the process of being medically retired from the Marine Corp.
I moved to Oakton, VA (four miles from their mother's place) so that it is easy for them to share time with both of us when they happen to be around.
Still, it amazed me just how much we accumulate over a lifetime and how we end up with bigger houses just so we can store it all. By the time I was through clearing the house I found I had managed to acquire 12 hammers, 7 full-size staplers, 30 pairs of scissors, etc. Clearly once you lose sight of something it is easier to go buy an...Expand for more
other one rather than spend hours looking for it. New strategy... disposes of stuff when I'm done using it, saves the annual costs of storing it, buys another item when I need it in a couple of years - repeat.
So, I hope that my latter 50s and 60s is spent with less clutter, less maintenance, and more time just enjoying whatever comes along.
--------
Like a supernova, Thomas Apple has been a star and he has self-destructed. Yet using that swirling cloud of cosmic debris he coalesces again . . . and again.
He has developed executive peer-based learning programs that have been held at the UC - Berkeley, Stanford University, UCSF and the Georgetown University. He created the UC Discovery Grant brand and marketing strategy for a $60 million University of California research grant program.
He was Nasdaq's vice president of marketing during the early 90s where he produced "the stock market for the next 100 years" a TV campaign universally acknowledged as one of the most effective branding efforts ever.
He's an inventor, having conceived the Nasdaq Marketsite and created the logo-stock ticker that is now a centerpiece of NYC's Times Square an image seen over 3 billion times around the globe each year. He's been president of the company that developed display systems used by major broadcasters including NBC Nightly News and ESPN.
He's merged bank operations of four banks across states lines during the mid-to late-eighties. He was there at the creation of the nation's largest credit-card issuer, MBNA, when it was just a newly created shell company.
He's been the executive of a recording studio, a record producer, an agent and manager of musical artists, a senior accounting officer, and the director of information technology. He's a risk-taker, a guy who knows how to get it done.
But then Thomas is just another individual with ADHD, just another kid from Lansdowne Senior High School!
