Thomas's Story
Life
Tom is a June 1958 Perry Graduate. He is graduate from Drexel (BS) & Penn State (MS) in Physics.
He married his classmate, Sally Kyler in 1962. They lived in Philly, then State College, PA, before moving to Westlake Ohio. In 2007, they moved to Shorewood, IL, due to accepting a new job offer as Track manager of the Autobahn Country Club. This unique Country Club for automotive driving enthusiast members, was featured on ABC World News in Nov, 2007.
In 2002, Tom retired as a full time engineer at PPG Ind., but continued part time as a consultant. Prior to joining PPG, Tom raced professionally full time for 10 years; the last 3 years in Indy Cars. This was especially unique, since Tom didnt even own his first passenger car until he was 27 years old. Tom credits his Perry days of social club and sports participation as key to success in this unusual career direction.
Sally worked as Toms team manager when they raced their own formula car. Later, Sally worked as an event management consultant for 20 years, primarily as the Entertainment Coo...Expand for more
rdinator for PPG Motorsports. She is currently retired, but volunteering for the Kiwanis Club of Shorewood.
Sally & Tom, along with some other Pittsburgh area classmates, organized two Perry HS Class Reunions (42nd & 45th). Due to relocation and work load, they only helped work on the 50th year reunion on a very limited basis. Tom continues to update the 1958 classmate database, while continuing to search for classmates not yet found (any help with these from anyone else is encouraged & would be greatly appreciated)!
Sally & Tom enjoy working out & playing tennis, as well as visiting friends around the country (some outside the USA). Tom has stayed involved with racing, both driving and training, over the years. He drove for and assisted Kettering University students, while competing in the fast Formula Lightning Electric Car Series. He also engineered for a friend in the pro Star Mazda Series. Finally, all of his background has culminated where he does driver training, coaching, organizing races, etc. at the Autobahn Country Club of Joliet, IL.
