Thomas's Story

Hello Class of '71! A brief update: After JD I entered the US Navy, first as enlisted (Cryptologic Technician), later as an officer (Intelligence Officer)...a "mustang." My Navy career spanned 20 years active and reserve service in several countries across the Far East and Central America. I also served in Desert Storm. During my Navy career I attended the SUNY College of Forestry earning a bachelors and later a masters. I completed a doctorate several years later. My civilian career was as a hydrologist, working for the Department of Interior. In this capacity I conducted planning and research studies involving all aspects of water (rivers, lakes, wetlands, glaciers) addressing everything from environmental/legal issues to climate change in the Western US. I also served as a Federal Negotiator on behalf of Native American tribes seeking to rectify their water rights. I retired as Principal Hydrologist of my agency in March 2008. In retirement (or more like: "semi" retirement), I am enjoying new and different pursuits. I was a visiting professor at a local university and am now part time - teaching in the earth, environmental, and atmospheric sciences arenas. I also am past president and now serving a...Expand for more
s a hydrologist for a non-profit organization (NecroSearch International) that is essentially a geek squad of various scientists assisting law enforcement on cold case, missing persons, and homicide investigations. I am also on the board of my local water district and our regional wastewater district. Finally, I am now involved in some international water/environmental work in SE Asia - what I consider to be a nice capstone to my career. When I slide back into retirement mode I find time to motorcycle, fly and do some world travel. I play mandolin an a local orchestra (Denver Mandolin Orchestra) and play mandolin and bass in a local bluegrass group. Occasionally I play the highland pipes, and volunteer for veterans organizations. I am married to Anita, a systems analyst with the National Business Center - we have been married 30 years. We have lived in the Denver area since 1987. Our children are Chris, 36, a stockbroker/innovator with Charles Schwab; and Jennifer, 34, a grant writer who just moved back to Denver from Chicago - so the whole family is now in town. We also have 3 grandkids - 2 boys and a girl - ranging from 2 years to 1 month (as of 2017) - they are the capstone to our lives! Regards, Tom
