Thomas's Story

Life Thomas Here........ Norwalk, Connecticut native, born and raised in a section of town known as "Whistleville" to most old timers from era's gone by. Whistleville was on the proverbial wrong side of the tracks by today's standards, but I wouldn't trade my childhood growing up there for anything on earth. It was, and still is a rough neighborhood, characterized by housing developments, row houses and ethnic gentrification. It was mostly Italian families then across the north and east sides of the area, and predominantly black on the south end. We all seemed to co-exist without any problems that couldn't be quickly resolved, depending where you were. It was a great place to learn some of life's most basic lessons, and I took with me a lasting knowledge-base of people, adaptation, and resourcefulness that guided my life and career moving forward. Moved to the "east side" in my teens, near the beach. The ocean ultimately became my first true love, an affinity that has only grown stronger as I matured. Attended parochial school for nine years, then switched to public in High School, graduating from Norwalk High in 1973. I immediately went to work as a commercial fisherman during High School, and after, attending Fairfield University at night. In the off-seasons I worked for an oil-spill recovery company, working mostly on water-borne oil spills along the northeast coast, and became fascinated with pollution-control technologies. I suspended my academic plans to work emergency response 24/7 in the environmental business, fishing whenever I had the time. I met my wife in 1979, married in 1980, and had two children, Luke, now 26, and Lauren, 25, by 1982. In '86 I left the oil spill company to start my own firm. We specialized in underground petroleum and chemical spills, and I trademarked four distinct technologies to detoxify damaged water supplies and contaminated soils. The firm grew to nearly 200 employees by 1995, with offices in six states. We had a third ...Expand for more
child, Kelly, in 1988, now 19 and in year #2 at college in Boston. I merged my firm in 1999, and with a national roster of 1000 employees, retired my stock in 2000 to pursue other endeavors, mostly because I could not adjust to "partners" who knew little or less about the business we were engaged in. Unfortunately, I divorced in 1996, and purchased an old estate in Easton, near my children. Both older kids came with me after the divorce in '96, and I guided them through middle school, high school and put them through college. My youngest stayed with her Mom because of her age, and moved to Madison in her Mom's new Beach PALACE (thank me very much)until she graduated high school. She spends her break time and summers here with me, and travels back and forth to her Mom's up east a bit. I never lost my affinity to the sea, and have kept a vessel steadily from 1970 to this day, obtaining a 100 ton captain's license in '88, and spending as much time as possible fishing for big game in the offshore canyons south of Nantucket Island, Montauk Point, and Manasquan Inlet, New Jersey. I thoroughly enjoy fishing off of South America, Costa Rica and Mexico for billfish, and various species of tuna, as well as hunting for big game around the globe. The oceans of the world and the vast, yet untouched wilderness areas of this seemingly small planet (jet travel has made the world much more accessible)have always brought me the peace and soul nourishment I've craved, and thankfully sated my entire life. My children have filled my life with sheer, immeasureable joy to round out what has so far been my life's adventure and journey of self-discovery. I give thanks to the Almighty each day for the abundance of love, experience, and resources to fullfill what so far has been the beautiful expedition that constitutes my small, but valuable life. I hope to return as much or more than the blessings I have received thus far. I launched a new firm this year....make your lives count....Tom
