Thomas's Story
Life
Graduated from Shippensburg University (In PA) with a BS in Geoenvironmental Sciences in 96. Yes that's right it took me a while. I am presently working in Rome, NY (45 minutes East of Syracuse) as a GIS Analyst. I am building 2 dimensional computerized surface models for flood mapping purposes and I am creating the actual paper maps as well. I live alone with my dog "Jessica" in a small home 1.5 miles from work. I tend to cycle, work on my house, golf, work on my house, surf the web, work on my house, and watch TV for entertainment, and work on my house (Get the idea). I picked up a 2006 Kawasaki Concours. Yeah I know, it's an old farts bike. Maybe I will get up to Laconia, NH for bike week some year. Also picked up a new 2004 CBR1000RR in 2007 (0.1 miles on it). Its my mid life crisis toy. I am having fun flying around the area but right now I can only ride it for 50-70 miles at a time. It has a killer riding position when you aren't as flexible as you once were. I did...Expand for more
purchase a softer seat, larger windscreen, and taller bars (Heli bars) so I will be able to ride it to work as soon as the weather cooperates. The 1 hour drive to work should get more interesting this spring. Nothing else exciting to report.
Workplace
I started out working as a surveyor, for the USGS as an intern, in Pennsylvania's bridge scour program. Then I moved to NH and was computer mapping Gas pipelines for a small company in Holderness, NH. Right now I am creating 2 dimensional computer models of the earth for flood mapping purposes that are used by FEMA.
Scratch that I started a new job January 2nd, 2008 and I am updating DFIRM (Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps) maps. It is keeping me busy and out of trouble. Its a lot of fun joking with all my coworkers and having them try to guess my age. So far only one person was on the money and he said he was guessing high on purpose. That makes me feel young for a little while. Nothing like shocking the younger generation.
