Tom's Story

I live in Janesville, WI., and work at North Shore Pathologists/Ascension All Saints Hospital in Milwaukee, WI since March of 2019. Before that I was at Mercy Health System in Janesville for 15+ years. I have been married for 34 years to Sally Scanlan Haas of Chapman, KS. We have three grown sons, all in their 30s, no grandchildren. All are doing well, After graduating from Central in 1975, and earned my BS degrees in Chemistry and Biology at Friends University in Wichita. From there I went to the University of Kansas in Lawrence for graduate school in Pharmacy (Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Design) and earned what would today be a PharmD degree, graduating in December 1983. . I married Tammie Proffitt of Wichita in August of 1979 (we divorced in 1983, no children).. Worked from Sept, 1983 to August 1984 at Walgreens and St. John's Hospital in Salina, where I met Sally (she graduated from Marymount in Salina with a BS Nursing degree in 1984). I did my medical training at Des Moines University (1984-1988), internship at KU-Wichita (1988-1989), residency in pathology at the University of Minnesota (St. Paul, MN (1989-1993), and Fellowship training for a year each afterwards at Loyola University (1996-1997 in greater Chicago and at Cincinnati (1997-1998). Worked at several places (one in Manhattan, KS) from 1993-2002. Sally and I and our sons have lived all over the Midwest, from the Twin Cities to San Antonio, Tx. our family and our years together-no major problems or upsets. We like to travel (most recently to Ireland, Scotland and England) and have also been to Mexico, Canada and Australia since 2008. Have also been to Hawaii. My current hobbies include reading, building plastic models of all types (I am entering my "second childhood"), and music (I play jazz guitar, electric bass, and have been trying to learn the organ). Sally thinks I should have a hobby that makes money-but then it would be called a job! I also enjoy watching weekend football games (Go Chiefs! Go Vikings!) and puttering around the house, working on various maintenance and "home improvements". Sally loves to both cook and garden extensively, and does a lot of volunteer work for our local Salvation Army, where she helps prepare the noon community hot lunches several times a week. She worked in various capacities full-time as an Operating Room/Surgical Nurse from 1984-2014, before "full-time" retirement. :) Was able to make it to the 30th Salina Central-South class reunion in 2005, but nothing since then. I would appreciate knowing if there are any other reunions pending. It would be nice to see many of you again, as we approach our 45th HS graduation anniversary. Maybe we will have "the big one" for our 50th in 2025!. Wishing you all (from Salina Central, Friends University, The University of Kansas, and Des Moines University) the best, and a happy and healthy new decade as we head into the 2020's. Life continues as always. Tom Haas, Christmas 2019.
