Thomas I.'s Story
Dr. Tom Hayes, a happy 70 yr old, is an international public health specialist. He currently lives in St Petersburg, Florida with his wife Marge, an International HR specialist and sails a Hunter 26 (Rover-1) on Tampa Bay. He chairs a private consulting group in International Healthcare and writes and speaks on key issues.
His most recent activities were as a member of an international team reviewing the progress towards a vaccine for malaria in children under five in Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Prior to that he was Team Leader for a major EC/World Bank initiative relative to HIV-AIDS and Tuberculosis in Swaziland.
He was Chief of Party for what was the largest USAID healthcare project, CRHP in Egypt, a multi-year initiative to restructure the hospital systems to local management and away from central Ministry of Health control.
He has been a guest lecturer at Montana State University, Ain Shams University (Cairo, Egypt), Palembang and Jakarta (Indonesia), Muhimbili University (Tanzania) and University of London (UK). nt the summer of 2003 in Iraq with the UN as Team Leader for a Refugee Project to repatriate families from Iran.
Tanzania, East Africa, has been a familiar locale for his work for more than ten years including directing an African Development Bank Rural Health initiative and a World Bank programme aimed at improving care at District Hospitals. He has worked on a series of assignments in Indonesia, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Francophone West Africa, Gulf States, France, and the UK (where he raised his children).
He has managed major hospitals including the American Hospital of Paris and the Cromwell Hospital in London as well as several facilities in the Middle East, Indonesia and the US. He served on the PM's committee advising ion re-organisation of the NHS and on the Board of the British Hospital Association.
He writes and publishes short stories, some of which are based on his travels and has a blog (missivesfromtih.blogspot.com). He and Marge travel often to Europe (most often by ship) and they dream of restoring a cottage in Ireland so they may spend the Florida summer season in a more pleasurable environment.
