Thomas's Story
After wondering a bit about what to do after high school, and knowing I loved cars, I decided to go to Ga Tech and get a Mechanical Engineering degree so I could work on the R&D side of the car industry. Tech was tough, but I figured out how to study and did well after the initial shock. By the time I finished, I could tell the US Auto industry was not doing well. So, even though I received multiple offers from them and the military aircraft industry, went to Ga. Power to work on the Plant Vogtle nuclear plant. In October, 1980, my father died after a short illness, and I decided to move my mother and myself up to New Jersey to be near relatives. I never intended to stay. I enrolled in graduate school, and basically never left Rutgers University. I ended up with a PhD in Polymer Physics.

st to produce recycled plastic lumber, and developed several different structural blends to make plastic railroad ties, bridges, etc. My experience with cars and ME degree helped me immensely- as I had to build a lot of machines to do what I wanted virtually from scratch. Companies are licensing most of these technologies, and they are gradually spreading to other continents. I have also developed fire retardant coatings, and multiple military and non military uses for them are in the works. I have developed ways to turn waste paint into plastics, and am looking forward to scaling that technology up.
On the personal side, I am married with two really terrific kids, and they are both bigger and maybe smarter than I am. I play drums actively in a hillbilly and a rock band, and have learned how to balance fun and being productive. I have fun on both counts. I still love cars, and work on them every chance I get.
