Thomas "Tom"'s Story
Life
I left Rio late in 1953 and graduated from Hampton HS, Hampton, VA, in 1955--departed and attended college in Wichita, Kansas--graduated from the University of Wichita in 1960 (now Wichita State Univ.) Took a MA in political science at Vanderbilt University in 1963 (organized "Vanderbilt Students for Kennedy" in 1960 in a hostile political environment), studied in Rio de Janeiro, and entered the US Army in 1964 for two years. Married in college and divorced in 71, when Leslie and I married; we lived in Wichita, Kansas, for thirty years. We have raised three children: two college grads, and our youngest son attends USC. f raising the kids; I went back to grad school for a MFA in creative writing (1985) after a stint as an officer with the Wichita PD. After the serious academic retread and against my better judgement, I taught political science at Wichita State until 1999--you might say I was drafted. Last year we moved to Spruce Pine, NC, after our youngest finished high school and headed out for L.A. and USC; and we live in the woods in the Blue Ridge mtns. Between us and the kids, we delivered seven votes for Al Gore in 2000. I recently received an award for my work in the 90s as secretary, Dept. of Kansas, of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. I miss Kansas, but Leslie needed a break after thirty years in a landscape that only a native plainsman can love.
