Thomas's Story

Life I move to Jamestown ND, I have lived there, since 1989, met my wife and two kids there. My son is 37 and works as the Post Master for the Valley City ND Post Office, and my daughter is 34. She and her husband run a farm in Fredonia ND. My daughter is a postal clerk in Lehr ND. My son has two children now. His daughter is 16 and his son is 13. My hobbies are street rods and computers. I restored a 73 Pontiac Trans Am. I am rat rodding a 1949 Chevy Pick Up. I am still very outgoing, I keep myself very busy by being on many boards: 20th infantry (a re-enactor-1872 era), James Valley Street Machines, and the one I am most proud of is keeping the history alive by helping at Fort Seward in Jamestown. Here at Fort Seward is the only place in the state of ND that you can see a 30ft x 60ft America flag on a 130ft pole. Quite the thing to see. If your ever in ND stop by and say Hi! Thanks for visiting! School k-12......Sucked. Not you folks just being moved from town to town, Dad was a Woolworth manager. I never had the chance to fit in with the crowd. Just when I would get to know folks, another move. That's why I'm so outgoing. Had to make friends quickly, due to such short time of being there. College was my folks choice, did it and moved on. Enjoyed the time in Winona Minnesota. Partied, met lifelong friends, and sucked at college. Austin (MN) Area Vocational School (AVTI) was where I wanted to go. After college I did what I wanted. Most of you knew me as an AV guy (nerd). AVTI was training me in the audio visual field which I have done for over 35 years now. Workplace My Dad was a Woolworth manager. We moved every two years, and I guess I followed in those footprints. After College & Vo-tech I started working as an assistant manager for the Kmart Corp. I did Kmart from HS to Votech. While doing this, I was always looking for a job in TV. I interned at KEYC in Mankota Mn and while in Austin Mn I did weekend cameraman. See picture of me on main page. In Peoria Ill, I got my chance working for WHOI. I did the production end of it. WHOI was the start of climbing the ladder. Next I moved to Cincinnati and worked for an Independant TV Station (WIII) for a few year, doing the same thing. Oh ya never move for a quarter an hour raise! My friend from college Rob, helped me move back to Minnesota with a jo...Expand for more
b at a real television production house "EmCom". We made everything from MTV videos to Kathy Smith excerise videos. My great story there is the day Hal Brooks the Olympic hockey coach took my (Lincoln Deli) lunch. I had to eat with the crew that sucked! Worked at EmCom til it closed it doors, then what? I found out the cable shopping channel Cable Value Network (sucked up by QVC) needed a master control operator. What a boring job. Nothing to do except wait for the half hour so I could do something. Lasted there one year and bailed for an opening at the PBS / TLC channel show HOMETIME. I was their production engineer. Setting the cameras, micing the hosts. Sat and Ate most of the time. It was hurry up and wait job. It was back in Cincinnati that I met some of my relatives that I had never met before. It was the meeting that send me on a journey of discovery. I told Dean Johnson the host and owner of HOMETIME, I was quitting him and moving to North Dakota. He said your crazy, and he was right. I never regretted it thou. I left everything and everyone to find my life in North Dakota. That was in 1989. I've been here ever since. I started with running a NAPA parts store in the town of LaMoure ND. Lasted at that for a year, moved on to the town of Jamestown ND where I live today. I worked in a lumber yard, Holiday gas station, Wal mart. It was at this time that I started my own production company LAST MINUTE PRODUCTIONS. I do industrial videos and mom/pop projects. I did this job for 20 years. While working these jobs I kept trying to get into the only televison work they had in Jamestown, their cable company, Cable Services inc. Three times I tried, three times they turned me down. The fourth time they called me at Wal mart. Interviewed me, and told me I should know in a week if I have the job. A week went by and nothing. So I called the couple that own the cable company, the husband said "didn't my wife call you?" "You've been hired for a week" and now I have been here working for the them now for 17 years. I'm what I have always wanted to be a one man production department. Ugh! High School, Retail and Television have kept me going thru the years. Thanks to my dad and the love of commercials as a kid. If I did not do this I would just be another grease monkey working on your car. Drop me a line and say Hi!
