Life
Hey, fellow Warhawks. Hope this finds all of you well. Biggest change for me since the 20-year is my career. I left the newspaper biz in 2000 after being recruited by Merrill Lynch to become a part of its internal communications team on Wall Street. I was still happy in the newsroom and wasn't looking to leave, but I couldn't refuse the money these mooks were throwing my way. And turns out that I loved the job, loved working in lower Manhattan, loved the schedule, etc. But then the internet and telecom bubbles burst and I got caught up in massive layoffs. I was really angry about it, since ML recruited me and I left my newspaper career, but then about a month later 9/11 happened and suddenly I wasn't so angry anymore. I was actually thankful not to have been down there, for obvious reasons. Like the old saying goes, when a door closes, another one opens. o my fifth year, serve on the Executive Board of our union and I absolutely love it, love the kids, even when they tease me about the way I dress and how old I must be (I never tell them!). But they make me laugh, and keep me on my toes ... My daughter, Natalie Kathleen, is going into the 4th grade. She talks ceaselessly, is skinny as a rail, and is a Dakota Fanning look-a-like. Thank God she doesn't have my Italian nose ... My wife, Dreama, is an executive for Wells Fargo and travels all over the country working with Fortune 500 companies and relocation programs. It's a tough job, but she is very good at it. ... We have a border collie named Gracie and two guinea pigs, who are cute but just hide in their huts all day ... I still have family in Louisville ... my Mom is in Plantation Hills, my older sister, Juli, and her family live just down the road from her, and my brother, Stephen, lives in Crestwood. I don't get home near enough. I miss Kentucky, that's for sure. My little sister, Lori, is in Knoxville with her family and my Dad lives about a half-hour from them.
