Thomas's Story

Life After graduating high school in 1961, I served 20 years in the military from which I retired in 1982. In 2005, I retired again, this time from the US Postal Service. Now I'm permanently retired, on Social Security and enjoying my leisurely life (I guess you can call me a governmental triple-dipper). But I am still active playing "Landlord" for several rental properties and doing volunteer work with the Red Cross. I've been married once and was 27 when I got married. That lasted 22 years and resulted in three children and five grandchildren. I'll probably never remarry because I'm set in my ways and doubt if anyone could ever put up with me. I currently live just outside the city limits of Huntsville, Alabama and love it here, and if I ever do move again, it will be further south near a beach or out of the country on a sunny beach. School Most of my elementary years were in Andover where I made many of my early friendships, most of whom I've had no contact with over the years. I attended RHAM my freshman and part of my junior year, spending my sophomore year in Florida. I returned to RHAM for a couple months in my junior year prior to transferring to Windham High in Willimantic where I graduated. I remember that our 8th Grade class in Andover made up a class book of which I still have a copy. I believe we had 23 girls and 7 boys in that class and our teacher was Hazel Floyd. I have always wondered what it would be like to update that book. If any of you would be interested in providing me with names and phone numbers of others in that class, please contact me by email through "Classmates" or better yet call me at (256) 859-5728. The only persons in that class that I have had any contact with is Don McGrath and Gladys Wilhelm. I only saw a couple names from that class on this website. ration while in the military. In addition, the educational experience I have received through travel in the military can never be replicated in a classroom. Workplace I went into the military right out of high school in 1961 and retired in Huntsville, Alabama (1982). I then got a job as an air defense systems engineer with Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville. That job lasted 10 years, after which I went to work for the Post Office as a mailman for another 10 years until retiring in April 2005. I'm now permanently retired, but not ready to quit living yet. I will always be doing something. Right now, I'm a disaster volunteer for the Red Cross. In addition, I have accumulated several rental properties over the years which keep me busy doing repairs and rental management. Military Two days after graduating in 1961, I found myself on a train to Parris Island, South Carolina for Marine Corps boot camp (I still remember those days quite vividly). I spent four years in the marines, then got out and bounced around for almost a year before joining the army. During my 20 years in the military, I did a tour of duty on Okinawa, two tours each in Korea and in Vietnam, and three years in Germany. My U.S. tours included: San Diego, CA; Cherry Point, NC; Huntsville, AL; El Paso, TX; and Las Cruces, NM. During my 20 years of military service, I was blessed with many travel experiences and have seen most of the world including Australia and almost every country in Asia and Europe. About the only places I haven't been is Central/South America and the Middle East. Update. In 2009 I took a month long trip south to Belize and Yukatan, Mexico spending two weeks in each. Then in 2012 I took a 3 month trip to Ecuador where I may eventually move to, because I just loved it there. They only have two seasons there - wet and dry, and it is eternal spring/fall.
