Thomas's Story
After graduating from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1967, I attended the University of Kansas until the military draft lottery drew my birthdate at number 96. I enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1970 and was honorably discharged in 1973. After the Army, I moved to Washington state, the home of my wife, Diana. I graduated from Central Washington University with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
I worked for 30-plus years as a newspaper journalist in Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon and Washington, the last 17 years as editorial writer and columnist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

g from newspaper journalism in 2006, I directed public affairs and crisis communications for several state agencies, retiring from state government service in 2016 to our small ranch in North Central Washington state, where I occasionally provide a final retirement home for aged rescue horses.
Diana and I have been married for almost 52 years. She provided loving and enriching child care out of our home for many years (to augment an often skimpy journalist's wages) and then returned to college at age 60 to earn her bachelor's degree. We have three children, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
