Thomas"Skip"'s Story
Life
Better known then and now as "Skip". After graduation, I attended UC Berkeley and received a degree in Electrical Engineering. I was in the Navy as an engineering duty officer, and then I moved to Boston to join MITRE where I'm now an Executive Director. I live, and work, in Massachusetts. But due to work and studies as part of the USAF Scientific Advisory Board, I do travel to the DC area often. Married, no kids, but I have 2 cats. Hobbies: Restoring or driving Austin Healeys (2 at the moment), Travel (shipped one of the Healeys to Europe for summer 2001 driving tour), Photography (of course) and Woodworking (Teak and Cherry furniture). Went to the 20 year reunion, wouldn't mind seeing folk at another... or at least more "bios" on this site...:-)
Lately, I've mostly retired from MITRE. I'll work on a project if it interests me, but more and more of my time is being spent enjoying travel. Recently, we broke ground for our new dream house on the Tennessee River. I've always wanted a grand view, and this house will certainly fit the bill. We enjoyed an African photo-safari a few years ago, but this year's trip to the Galapagos was really the tops. Friends are encouraging a trip to Antartica, so we may do that later, but meanwhile we're enjoying time seeing the USA from our motorhome. Over the years I've managed to meet a lot of interesting people, and they are further connected to interesting folk. The old "Kevin Bacon" degrees of separation is fun to play. I think I'm within 1 step (either I've personally met them or good friends have met) every president since Eisenhower, most of the Russian leadership since Gorbachov, and a bunch of other world leaders. The list also includes a few folk from the entertainment industry including Sinatra, Brokaw, Fonda (Jane), and a few folk from the corporate leadership world including Gates, Bloomberg, Buffet, Ellison. The list includes leaders of all the armed services, plus quite a few astronauts. Sadly, the list also includes people killed on 9-11-2001, but happily it includes good friends within the academic and scientific world. I've even a good late friend in the "spy" business (partially credited with breaking the German Enigma codes during WWII). I think the only sports figure of note that I've met is Mohamed Ali (sat next to him on an airplane when his name was still Cassius Clay). When I think back on my life I generally think of myself as being rather bland, but when I think of my friends and acquaintences I find it amazing that there are so many interesting people with whom I've had the privelege of interacting.... some of whom I met at JEB Stuart.
