Thomas's Story

What to write in a space that it is very likely no one will read. I see so many people posted here that the names ring a bell and there is no other information available. And lets not forget that in order to fully realise the benefits of this space, ya gotta go GOLD, baby! Well, Gold ain't in my future right now, so y'all can read this, I just won't know who has. The miracle of technology. Hmmm, so where to start. Some say the beginning is best but that might be too far, so lets just go from where I left school. After leaving Humberside's hallowed halls, I hit the work world and held a miriad of jobs from working at the 5 star CN hotel, L'Hotel as it was called then, to bussing tables and scooping ice cream. Married my first wife, moved to Peterborough, fathered one daughter, went to college, fathered a second daughter, graduated and moved to Morrisburg to work for a radio station as the producer. Shortly after the move to Morrisburg I divorced my first wife and kept my daughters. I made the move to Cornwall to be closer to my job as well as schools and day care for the girls. Met my second wife while attending my father's church in Morrisburg. Too bad the Lord works in such mysterious ways. We got married and lived together in Cornwall for a while, then Dunvegan for her job/career, then back to Morrisburg. At this point she left and I was on my own again with the girls, now both teenagers and quite independant, with the exception of financial idependance, but then, some things never change. About a year after the second wife left, my oldest daughter decided that she wanted to go live with her mother and so she has been living with her since then. My youngest and I are now back in Cornw...Expand for more
all and she will be finishing Grade 11 this June (08). Throughout all of this I have been with the same employer although the company has changed hands once in that time and I changed job titles once, I am now the Chief Engineer. Sounds more important than it really is. Sixteen years for the same company is really quite mind numbing but I try not to think of it too much. When it comes to thinking back to the school years, it can really get me down when I think about all the people I knew then and how many of them I have lost touch with. I'll be the first to admit that I had my problems back then and I will take this opportunity to apologise to anyone that I may have offended then. I see so much of that in the youth of today and wonder that nobody smacked me upside the head. There are a faithful few who have stuck with me over the years and to whom I owe a great deal, the most significant of those being Mr. James David Smith. He has been there for me and I for him at various tenuous times, but even his friendship is being neglected by me of late. Yipes, this is beginning to get maudlin. Time to change the tone or stop writing. At this point, May '08, I don't know how much else I can add to this, since as I stated at the top, it's unlikely anyone will actually read this. It would be uncharacteristic of me to carry on too much about my personal life so I think I will leave it there. If someone does read this and feels the strange compulsion to get in touch with me, you can always drop me an email at thomsmith at sympatico dot ca. In closing I will say that 42 did not provide me with the meaning to Life, the Universe and Everything, but there's still time to figure it out. Cheers, Thom Smith
