Thomas's Story
Born 20 March 1943, West Point Military Academy, West Point, New York. 1953 family migrated to Salem, OR. Attended Bush school(1 yr), attended Richmond school(2 yrs), attended Leslie Jr High school(3 yrs), attended Salem Academy(1 yr). 17 yrs old in September 1960 volunteered and joined the U.S. Air Force, from 1960 to 1970 Honorable discharge. GI Bill 1973 graduated with a degree in Forestry. During forestry school worked summers at Detroit Ranger Station, Detroit, OR. 1974 hired as a Forester by the BLM, Dept. of The Interior, Salem, OR. t Service. 10 yrs with the Dept. of Defense(60 to 70), 1 yr with the Dept. of Agriculture(72 to 73) & 33 yrs with the Dept. of The Interior(74 to 2006 along with 23 yrs of Wildland Firefighting). 2006 to 2013 Traveled around the world volunteering with the Earthwatch Institute doing environmental / wildlife work. Last adventure was in 2017 with the Sierra Club, consisting of two(2) projects, Maui-Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup & Maui Cultural Lands, Education/ Archaeology/ Reforestation. 2006 to present day volunteer with the VFW 661-Uniform Display Museum, Salem, OR.
