Tina's Story

Life Married to Thomas White Jr. who attended Huffman High School and graduated a year after me in 1987. We met at church, Eastside Baptist, and well the rest is history. We dated 2 years and were engaged one...we married March 15, 1993, and will celebrate 14 years in March. He and I had our first child, Andrew, in May of 1994 and in January of 1995 I quit my job and we moved to Jackson, Ms. This was so I could be a stay at home mom. We have now been here 10 years and love it...Andrew is 12 and in sixth grade...his sister Anna was born in May of 1998 and is 8 years old in third grade.. We actually live in a suburb of Jackson, Madison, and are so happy here. We are members of Parkway Hills United Methodist Church. I am blessed to have such a marvelous and loving husband and two beautiful and smart children. Thomas is a Information Systems Manager with a Steel Fabrication company here in Jackson and enjoys his work...Somewhat of a computer nerd but I love him more than life. He treats me like royalty. I don't really miss my nursing, but do miss the kids I cared for at times. I have stayed in touch with several friends from high school Ruth Keller Searchfield and Melissa Archer Jackson. I consider them some of my dearest friends. I lost touch again with Dena Styles Rife maybe I will connect up with her again via classmates. I didn't make the 10 year reunion by choice...I loved the education I got at Vestavia,,,but that was about it. Unfortunately our beach week this past summer fell at the same time as the 20 year reunion..I was going to actually go..but didn't make it. We have a beautiful home and are very content with our lives....I could not be happier. Would love to hear from a few people that graduated with me and were in school with me from first grade on up. For those of you reading this from Huffman High School class of 1987...Thomas would also love to hear from some people he graduated with. Phil Nation thanks for getting back in touch with Thomas. Classmates does not let you put double info down. Hence I filled my stuff out only to realize Thomas couldn't put his info down too. So just email either of us and catch up with Thomas I am sure he would love it. He would love to hear from Robert Branch. Paula I know he has been in touch with you so this is great!! School Vestavia Hills Elementary East was great. I have wonderful fantastic memories of that time. Mrs. Fountain was my first grade teacher I believe. Then Mrs. Strop...then 3rd was Mrs. Young..it was there that I met Dena Styles Rife. Mr.Platt was 4th grade..my first male teacher and I thought he was great..and Mrs. Clark my 5th grade teacher. The middle school was pretty good..too...we all loved to hang out out back after lunch. Clothes were so important then: Calvin Klein jeans and Pappagallo purses. So strange to watch the clothes I wore in middle school back in again and on the kids just a tiny bit older than my son Andrew. I had a lot of friends that I still remember. When we are in Birmingham I still go by the schools just to see them.I also love to go by my old house...High school was ok..I wasn't exactly popular...just average. I did make some really great friends there and still are close with 2 of them. Ruth Keller Searchfield and Melissa Archer Jackson. Ruth has been married longer than me now to Chris and has 3 children Jordan, Haley and Kyle..Melissa is married to Mike and has 2 boys. I got a fabulous education but socially it was tough in high school. I loved choir...but was not particularly outgoing...I did have some great teachers. I am still close with Dianne McDaniel Teer, she is remarried now,..and all her children are very dear to me. She is even still teaching math at VHHS. They were and still are like my second family. She keeps me updated on things going on periodically at VHHS. I talk to Monica pretty often she is an orthopaedic surgeon in Gillette, Wyoming and has an awsome husband and two adorable children...Rowdy and Jordan. David is also married, in Colorado and has 3 girls...finally Steven is in his second year out of Auburn and is teaching school and loving it..after a brief stint working for Kimberly-Clark in Appleton, Wisconsin. I do miss the pep rallys and wish my kids could at least go to one of them. Its odd living in Mississippi I see the Rebel Man everywhere because of Ole Miss, but it makes me think of Vestavia. Can't hardly believe so much time has passed but it has. Hoping some elementary and middle school p...Expand for more
eople will contact me. I am very anxious to catch up with Becky Holcomb, Shelley Powell, and was in touch with Dena Styles Rife but lost touch with her again. I have also been in touch off and on again with Charleen McCabe Thompson she is married to coach John Thompson and he is as of very recently going to do some coaching at Ole Miss. Although, they have made their home in Arkansas. I got back in touch with her a number of years ago when she was living in Hattiesburg and John was coaching at Southern Miss. I spoke with her a few weeks ago and she is doing well..and they are keeping the home in Arkansas...while John coaches for about 3 years at Ole Miss. She told me they would have a second home in Mississippi. She has two adorable boys..Cabe and Hays. Would love to hear from some people. I didn't make the 20 year reunion as we had our yearly beach trip fall the same time as the reunion. We will possibly try and make Thomas 20 year reunion this summer. College After graduating from High School in 1986 I attended Universtity of Montevallo for one year. I had the time of my life. People in the real world are a lot different than the majority of people I went to high school with. I became much more outgoing..and did not feel any pressure to be popular etc...Or any pressure that I was not popular.. I got dates and learned that people really did not recognize me in relation to being popular or not. I learned also how to manage time and I missed my family so much. They moved to Florida the year I started college at University of Montevallo. I didn't realize how great I had had it at home at all. I joined Alpha Delta Pi and made some really wonderful friends. Renee Rouverall was my first roomate ...and she was a sorority sister. She had gone to John Caroll High School. Lisa Carbonie was my big sister in Alpha Delta Pi. Several other high school alums were also in my sorority Shelley Powell and Lisa Greer. Lisa Carbonie was such a great friend to me and had also gone to Vestavia High graduating in 1983. Toward the end of my first year I decided I wanted to do more than major in Psychology...so I got accepted at Samford University Nursing School which is where I really settled down and got serious about school. Montevallo was a great first year and I am so glad I got to have so much fun there. When I went to Samford it was a huge change for me. I had to let sorority go because my nursing work and clinicals to go along with classes were too difficult to manage together. I wanted to do well. I was asked to join Sigma Theta Tau before I graduated..which is the honor society for nursing students. I was never in honor society in high school so it was such a huge joy for me. I finished my associates degree in 1989...and took my RN licensure boards in Montgomery and passed first time. I then spent two more years completing my BSN. Nursing school was so challenging and it really brought out the best in me...I am proud of what I accomplished at Samford and am glad that my degree is something I myself earned and it can never be taken away. Workplace After graduating from Samford University Nursing School in 1991 with my BSN I went to work at The Children's Hospital of Alabama. I worked on the Child Psychiatric unit. Evening shift for 1 and a half years and then day shift for 1 and a half years. About 6 months after having my first child, Andrew, our family moved to Jackson, Ms and I became a stay at home mom which I am still to this day. I was asked to be charge nurse of my unit right before I resigned, but turned it down as I knew we were moving and I wanted to be at home with my child. I miss the other nurses I worked with at times...and know in my heart that I made a difference in a lot of childrens lives who had lots of problems. I will always believe that the children I cared for made me appreciate all the things I had been given in life even more. So few people that went to high school with me really knew what it was to do without...I will always believe I was sheltered to a large degree because of my high school..I am so thrilled that I had what I had..and so thrilled that I got to see other people who did not have. In some small way it increased my belief that same is not always good. I am glad I saw life and that I moved away from Vestavia and experienced things on my own. I am truly blessed and so grateful that God gave me so much. He is continuing to give me opportunities that enrich my life and the lives of my family.
