Thurber's Story
Life
After NHS, I went to Cerritos & am the only person to have a humanities A.A. from there. Then on to Cal-State U. for a B.A. & M.A. in history, wkith a thesis on international relations in the Bronze Age East Mediterranean. I went to Fuller Seminary, where I was a Fuller Middler Year intern in Bolivia, and graduated with an M.Div. I was youth pastor at Latin American Methodist in Pasadena. Then I taught school for a while before going to school in India (sociology). More teaching and then to UCLA, where I got my Ph.D. in history.
Since then, I've been teaching college. My dissertation was published by SDSU Press (Tijuana: The History of a Mexican Metropolis). It was researched on a fellowship from the OAS. (I'm also published in Mexico, India, and Poland.) In 2000 I was...Expand for more
a Fulbright Scholar - Teacher in Canada, where I studied the US-Canada border.
Currently I teach at Cerritos College & at Santa Ana Colege. I am also on a board as CFO (On Eagles' Wings), which provides educational and recreational opportunities for kids in mobile home parks in Orange. I'm also affiliated with the U.S. Center for World Mission in Pasadena, CA, as a mobilizer. Along the way, I married; we have no kids. I met my wife thanks to a faculty secretary who introduced us at the first college I taught in, San Diego Christian College.
I am due to give a paper on the history and archaeology of Jesus' passion at the Evangelical Theological Society, Talbot Seminary, Biola U., April 7, 1-8 PM (mine is at 4 or 5 PM). I am also a member of the Conference on Faith & History.
