Tim's Story

Who in fact remains that person they were in high school? Some time in my early 20's I finally hit puberty and people stopped calling me "miss". Slowly I had begun a transformation from "Pat" (SNL) to something that resembled a man. In my late 20's I discovered that working out, cycling and other sports are a wonderful way to a) have fun b) get fit. I was no longer that fat kid in high school that everyone made fun of. Who knew eating so many potato chips would cause a weight problem? So... One afternoon while driving from Toronto (my home since '87) to London to visit my folks - top down wind in my hair, sun shining brightly, Beach Boys - "surfin' USA". I took a detour and headed for I.D.C.I. I parked and walked to the track....Expand for more
I ran that F'in track again and again. I remembered how in High School I was the last kid still running the track while everyone was moving onto whatever sport we were doing that day. I remembered running - puffing and panting, past the classroom windows, to the sneers and jeers of those inside. I don't have the words to describe how it feels to no longer be the fat kid in high school. How liberating it is to no longer judge myself based on the opinions of those whom I shared my high school years. It was after all only 5 years. At he time however they were very long years. Would I go back? NEVER. I sometimes wonder how many would? Bitter? No. I love the man I have become, but this is the scar that high school left on me.
