Timothy's Story

Born in Maysville, KY, I have lived in Roanoke VA, Ashland KY, Independence KY, and Silver Grove KY. I attended Southview Elementary (Roanoke), Cannonsburg Elementary, Advance Elementary (Flatwoods), Whites Tower Elementary (Independence), Twenhofel Jr High School (Independence), and Silver Grove High School. Upon graduation, I attended Northern Kentucky University and received both the Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Music Education degrees in 1982. From 1982-86, I worked at various jobs, including substitute teaching and music ministry. I lived in Louisville briefly in 1984-85. Upon returning from Louisville, I got a job as shoe salesman at the old All About Sports in Newport. I worked there part-time through the fall of 1986, when I got a teaching position in the Boone County School District. From 1986-1991, I taught music at several elementary and middle schools, mostly as an itinerant. I began working at Kelly Elementary in 1991 and worked there until the summer of 2012 (21 years). In 1993 I received my M.A. in Educatio...Expand for more
n from Georgetown College. In 2012, I transferred from Kelly Elementary to the newest school in Boone County, Thornwilde Elementary in Hebron. After 35+ years of teaching, I retired in July 2022. FAVORITES: Music - Beethoven, 1960s - '80s popular music, Pat Metheny, some musicals (esp Rodgers and Hammerstein), jazz Books - The Bible, Sacred Fire (Peter Lilliback), Washington: A Life (Ron Chernow), The Reason for God (Tim Keller) Movies - Indiana Jones series, Airplane, Ben-Hur (1959). One of Tim's favorite quotes is: The great thing about the arts is that you can only learn to do it by doing it. And if a child gets that idea early --- that that's how you learn things, by doing it --- that may be the most important thing you can give them. You can't learn to play the piano by reading a book about playing the piano. You can't learn to paint without painting. You have to do it. And in doing it, you suddenly begin to see... 'I can do this.' Then, after a while, 'I can not only do this; I'm getting better! ---David McCullough, Author
