Tim's Story
Following high school I enrolled in the University of Kentucky, first majoring in Biology, and minoring in History. My initial plans were to go on to Veterinary School. Unfortunately, I didn't pay enough attention in Mrs. Furnish's Algebra Class, and my college Finite Class proved far too difficult. As a result, I had to give up any plans to go on to Veterinary School. Luckily my advisor was also my History professor and he suggested I switch my major and minor and become a history teacher. While I'd never thought of becoming a teacher, John Wesselman and I did have a great time in high school. I gave it some thought and decided to make the change. However, I decided to remain in the College of Arts and Sciences and simply get a Teaching Certificate. My Senior year of College I married Linda Howard (Class of 1969) and then commuted three days a week to Lexington from Erlanger to finish my undergraduate degree. During the Spring of 1972 I was fortunate enough to do my Student Teaching at Simon Kenton High School in Independence, and was hired by the Kenton County School District to teach at SK in the Fall. With a lottery number of 61, I always knew there was a possibility of being drafted after I graduated, and as luck would have it, I was drafted in August of 1972, Luckily, I was able to delay my induction until after Christmas which allowed me to finish my first semester of teaching. I completed my Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and then went on to Artillery School at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. I graduated in May of 1973 with a 13B10 MOS, Basic Field Artillery Crewman. In military slang, I was a Gun Bunny, Pro Jo Humper, or a Cannon Cocker. I was lucky enough to be sent to West Germany, where I was assigned to the 1st Battalion 36th Field Artillery in Augsburg, Germany. During my in-processing, the PSNCO noticed that I'd been a high school teacher, and since the Battalion Legal Clerk was leaving the unit, he asked me if I'd like to become the new Battalion Legal Clerk. him if it would get me out of working on the guns (howitzers). He said yes, so I began my on-the-job training and assigned to SI (Battalion Headquarters) as the new Legal Clerk for the unit. During Field Exercises I was the XO's driver. My wife joined me in Augsburg, and we lived in a German apartment building with wonderful German neighbors. I have to say that the 19 months I spent in Germany were the happiest days of my life. A part of me will always be in Germany. Germany, "That place forever in your heart, no matter where you live." Following my two years in the Army, I returned to the Kenton County School District, and Simon Kenton where throughout my career I taught American History; World History; and AP European History. I also served as the Dean of Boys, and as a Senior Class Sponsor as well. In addition, I coached Girls Softball for 13 years, and Boys and Girls Cross Country for six years. In February of 1993 I went on loan to the Kentucky Department of Education from the Kenton County School District for three and a half years where I worked in Assessment Development, and as the Team Leader for the statewide High School Restructuring Initiative. In the Summer of 1996, I returned to the Kenton County School District as the Secondary Supervisor and served in that capacity until my retirement in 2003. However, I must say that the happiest days of my teaching career were spent in the classroom at Simon Kenton. When I retired, I was given an Honorary Diploma from Simon Kenton, which proudly hangs in my den. Fortunately, I still maintain my connection to SK as the Public Address Announcer for the Pioneer Basketball Program. This October, I will begin my 45th season as the announcer for the program. I’ve served as an Adjunct Facility member at Thomas More University, Northern Kentucky University, along with Western Governors University. I'm happy to say I have two wonderful sons, and six adorable grandchildren. God has truly blessed me, as I hope he has the other members of the Class of 1968.
