Tim's Story
Life for me after graduating from Millard South has been pretty much an evolutionary process. I went to UNO starting in Fall of '84 after taking a year off to get my bearings. I got Bachelor's Degree with a double major in Marketing & Management. Since I paid my own way through without taking any loans or scholarships, it took longer than the norm, so I didn't graduate until Fall of '91.
Today I work at one of the big insurance companies in Omaha (no bonus points if you guess which one). I'm what they call a Senior Sales Support Representative, and the job includes working with our agents and brokers out in the field to solve problems and answer questions they have regarding products. I run quotes on prospective clients, advise agents on the proper forms to use based on the state they're in, train & supervise the other reps in my area, and help out in determining if a potential applicant will be accepted for coverage. There is a lot of phone work, and I suppose it could be seen as a glorified customer service job, but as I see it the level of expertise I've built up makes me feel like it's much more. Given how quiet I probably was in school, never being one to say much or do a lot of socializing, I can safely say that working in a sales-related job would not have been something I would have projected myself doing 25 years ago.
As far as the personal life front goes, things have not been as successful as I would have hoped in the past. Marriage never has found its way to my door, although I did come close in 1 relationship I was in about 10 years ago until it ended rather bizarrely (it's a pretty strange story and in retrospect, probably wasn't as bad an event for me as I thought at the time). I have done some dating from time to time, but to be honest, when I get home from work I just don't have the ambition for it. I used to wonder over & over why I hadn't found someone & what I had to do to turn that around, then one day I realized that all I was doing with that was making myself miserable. Now I take the approach that if it's destined to happen for me, it will find a way of coming about, and if not, then I can live with that as well.
Anyone who knows me or has been to my place would say without a doubt that cars are my obsession. Since I don't make the scratch to have the real thing, I manage to satisfy my obsession elsewhere. I've heard the description for it is an automo...Expand for more
bilia collector, and in my case that would be about right. I've managed to collect a lot of different auto-related items over the years, even going back to when i was still in school. I've accumulated a pretty good stack of sales brochures for cars going back into the middle 50's, along with racing programs as far back as the late 60's. From the photos & artwork on the walls to the diecast collection of all types & sizes. I think I have it pretty well covered. My dad worked on a pit crew out at Sunset Speedway back in the 70's & 80's, and every Sunday night over the summer I'd tag along. I guess it never got out of my blood, since I've been going to NASCAR races at Indianapolis eeach year since '94, and this spring I even got to take a couple laps around the Brickyard at 110 mph and my pic taken with the Indy 500 trophy.
Behind cars, I'd have to say that movies were my second big obsession. When VHS was the thing I managed to accumulate a couple of hundred tapes of films of all types. Thank God for DVD, heh heh heh. I dumped almost all the tapes & built up a library of movies & TV programs of all kinds approaching 1,200 in number.
My main way to blow off steam would have to be bowling. I got into my first league back in about junior high I think, and I've been in 1 league or another most every year since. Right now our team bowls in a league out at West Lanes here in Omaha. We've competed in the State tournament the last few years, but haven't managed to place in the money just yet. But like they say there's always next year. I do golf also, but it's safe to say I'm not too good at it. It really doesn't bother me all that much since I play for fun, and that's what it's supposed to be right?
As far as other interests go, I do manage to do a little bit of traveling. Just got back from visiting some friends out in the Western Slope country of Colorado. A few years ago my Dad & I went fishing with my uncle out on Lake Michigan, and I caught a 20-pound king salmon. Made for some good salmon steaks for grilling the rest of the Summer I can tell you. I've also seemed to develop a bit of talent as a photographer in recent years. It's gotten to a point where a friend of mine actually asked me to be a photographer for his sister's wedding after one of the photogs they had booked bailed on them. Some of the pics I've taken I've entered in a couple of contests at work, no awards yet though.
