As a child of mixed race growing up in a black neighborhood in Denver Colorado it was quite difficult. My parents were father Chinese and mother Japanese (I am ¾ Chinese and ¼ Japanese). My Grandfather Fred I. Kaihara passed away when I was seven years old, (Japanese) (my paternal Grandmother Barbara Heung Woo [Chinese] died when my mother and uncle were just seven years old and twelve years old respectively, knowing he would have to care for the kids and be a lawyer too, he married a young Caucasian lady Ethel Mable Kaihara to care for the kids and home. surprised when introduced to my grandmother, expecting to see a little old Japanese lady,( boy did that raise some hairs in the Japanese and Chinese community in the 40¿s and 50¿s) My grandfather started the first English language newspaper in CO the Colorado Times. My scout leader was Min Yasui (who defied the government during the Japanese interment). They saw that I took and learned martial arts (and Asian discipline) from age seven, and because of economic reasons at that time, ate little red meat, mostly fish and chicken, these two things I have carried with me to the present, except the martial arts, which I stopped practicing in 1991.
