Timothy's Story

After St. Boniface I went to Ferris High School and then to North Bergen High School when my family moved from Jersey City in 1961. After high school I joined the Air Force in 1965 and spent time in San Antonio Texas, Denver Colorado, Albany Georgia, Saigon South Viet Nam, Karat Thailand and Columbus Mississippi. I was an electronics technician in the Air Force and worked on a broad range of aircraft including reconnaissance aircraft, fighters and B52 bombers. When I was discharged in early 1969 I joined IBM in Bergen County NJ. At that time IBM¿ers joked that ¿IBM] stood for ¿I¿ve Been Moved¿ and accordingly, over the course of my 40 years with IBM, I was transferred to Essex County and then Morris County New Jersey. Followed by transfers to New York City, Miami Florida, Kingston New York, Raleigh North Carolina, Tampa Florida and then eventually back to Raleigh, where I still live. I actually just retired from IBM after 40 a year career. I am now doing some consulting project management work and plan to continue doing that for the next several years. I have been married since 1967 and we have grown 2 children, Jennifer who is married and the mother of my grandson, Tanner (who is pictured with me) and they also live here in Raleigh NC. Jen is a manager at Lenovo Corp. a computer manufacturer. My son Sean has recently returned to the University of Florida to pursue a law degree. Prior to that Sean worked for IBM in Atlanta and then Symantec Corp in Orlando Fl. Ultimately I would like to return to South Florida, ¿where in South Florida?¿ is the question. We have family in Miami and I would love to move there, but my wife does not want to put up with the congestion and traffic so we may end up in either Broward County (Ft Lauderdale area) or Palm Beach County where we own some property. We have no timetable. For the past couple of years I have been looking at Classmates.com and recognize the names of a few of the people, Evelyn (Balk) Schmidt, Priscilla (Koslowski) Lombardo, Mary Ann (Giacobe) Mattaliano, Mary (Stach) Gaeta, Vincent de Lorenzo. I see Annette (Nicodemo) Lanzo is on the list of students but it is Frank Nicodemo that I remember being in our class, I suspect he may be her brother. A few years ago, while I was on a project for a client that required that I commute to their offices in the Newport section of downtown Jersey City. Ironically I stayed at a hotel on 4th Street and Columbus Ave, right next to the Newport Mall. Of course this is within a few blocks of St. Boniface and just up the a few blocks away from the house we lived in on 4th Street and Jersey Ave. Needless to say I had to visit the old neighborhood, and things have of course changed. I had been told that the church had been closed but it has been reopened again. But the school building was sold off and is now condominium. It is funny to look at the front of the school building and see what was our 8th grade classroom is now someone¿s living room. Likewise the rectory and the convent were sold. What was our school yard is now a parking lot.. Second Street Park (corner of 2nd St and Jersey Ave) where we guys played ¿punch-ball¿ during lunch, is now an apartment building. My first visit back to the church itself turned out to be an extreme emotional trip back in time. Except for a few minor insignificant changes, the church has not changed in all these years. It is just about exactly the same way it was on the day we graduated from 8th grade. As I entered the church I was overcome by a flood of memories. As I knelt in a pew at the back of the church (on the ¿boys side¿. of course,) I could see the pews where we sat for our First Communion; the pews we occupied when we made our Confirmation. I could remember the endless precessions we had, the stiff ¿Buster Brown¿ collars and the big ties, the candles, the songs. I could see the various groups of pews we would sit in each school morning for Mass. How they moved around the church as we progressed from grade to grade. I was happy to see that the Alter is the same ...Expand for more
as it was back then. That large carved masterpiece, with all the nooks and crannies that still house the same statues as it did when we were going there. I could see in my mind¿s eye, the nuns scurrying around arranging things on the Alter, Sister Assumpta, Sister Mary Evelyn, Sister Mary Immaculate, Sister Carmelita, Sister Claude and the priests Father Stract and then Father Lynd. Now the church provides support for a new immigrant community, mostly Spanish speaking. I spoke to the new priest who said the archdiocese had closed St Boniface, but had reopened the church and assigned him as pastor, but he now splits his time between 2 churches. He told me that he was surprised at the rather large number of people who returned once the church was reopened because St Boniface had been their parish for many years. That visit sparked an interest to find out what happened to the rest of us who graduated from St Boniface in June of 1960. Because we are known as the ¿Viet Nam generation¿ I feared that some of the guys from our class could have been lost in the Viet Nam war. I figured that since was ended up in Viet Nam it is likely some others were there too. My experience was that I was stationed in Saigon for 4 months in 1967. During that time I traveled throughout the country on a special assignment. At each base we visited I would always looked for people I might know. While I did run across some people I knew none were from Jersey City. When my assignment in Viet Nam ended in November 1967 I was transferred to Thailand, where I spent the remainder of my 12 month tour. While in Thailand I traveled to several bases as well, but just as in Viet Nam, I didn¿t run into anyone from Jersey City there either. All along I knew I was lucky because I was an electronics technician in the Air Force, so there was little chance I would be exposed to any danger or fighting, but I of course I had no idea what experiences some of my friends from grammar school and/or high school would have had. Years later, after the Viet Nam War Memorial (The Wall) was dedicated, and because of my working with computers, I was able to access the Viet Nam War Memorial data base and search for the names of I knew at St Boniface, Ferris HS and North Bergen HS. This data base lists all the names of the people killed in Viet Nam. They are listed by date they died and by their home state and city. I not only searched by name I also searched by the State of New Jersey, because we have a tendency to moved around, just as my family did. I can¿t tell you how happy I am that I was unable to find the a single name of any of our classmates, that I could remember, listed on the Viet Nam War Memorial. That does not mean they weren¿t there or they didn¿t get wounded over there, but from what I could find none of our classmates were killed in the Viet Nam war. Over the years I have looked on the internet to see if I could locate some of the guys in our class - George Whittershine, Jeff Massa, Jimmy May, Freddy Eggers, Walter Slazinski, Frank Nicodemo, Dennis Roth, Herbert Meehan and the brothers Tommy and Jimmy Gilson. While I find some names listed multiple times, I have not been successful in locating anyone who was from our class. I did find a Thomas Gilson living in Bayonne, I called the number listed and left a message but never received a return call. I first saw Classmates.com and saw Evelyn Balk¿s name and I immediately remembered her. Every now and then I would go back and check to see who else registered and I finally decided to go ahead and join it just to reestablish some connections from back then. It is funny how so many of the things I learned (kicking and screaming) from St Boniface that still server me well to this day¿ I thank God for that opportunity but I would never want to do it again¿. I look forward to getting in touch with other members of our class.. Somehow, somewhere in the moves my family made we lost some of the class pictures ¿ I would love to see one, especially our 8th grade picture, if someone still has a copy.
