Timothy's Story
Life
Lieutenant Commander Timothy A. McClain USN, graduated from J. D. Darnell Senior High School and subsequently enlisted in the United States Navy in 1985 and reported to Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando, FL .
From Orlando, LCDR McClain went to Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Idaho Falls, ID where he was chosen to become an Engineering Laboratory Technician (responsible for maintaining reactor plant and secondary water chemistry). Due to his demonstrated leadership ability and outstanding knowledge of Naval Nuclear Power Plants he was chosen to remain as a Staff Instructor. After instructor duty he volunteered to serve aboard the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65).
LCDR McClain quickly established himself a leader by qualifying as an Engineering Watch Supervisor, and was handpicked to be the Leading Petty Officer for an entire Reactor Plant on the ship. LCDR McClain was the only First Class Petty Officer that qualified and stood the Officer of the Deck (Inport) watch (normally reserved for Chief Petty Officers and above). LCDR McClain also qualified as Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist. He was then selected to become an instructor at the Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando, FL.
At Naval Nuclear Power School, LCDR McClain completed both his Bachelors (Southern Illinois University) and Masters (Troy State University) degrees. In 1995, LCDR McClain was selected for advancement to Chief Petty Officer and in 1997, was selected for Officer Candidate School.
After attending the Naval Intelligence Officer Basic Course, LCDR McClain reported to Airwing EIGHT in 1998. LCDR McClain supported the intelligence collection requirements during OPERATION ALLIED FORCE. LCDR McClain also excelled as the Information Systems Security Manager and Strike Intelligence Analysis Cell Watch Officer. It was at the end of this tour that LCDR McClain redesignated to 1637 FTS.
In 1999, LCDR McClain then transferred to USSTRATCOM to be the Chief, Eurasia Military and Political Affairs. He was handpicked to help rework the Single Integrated Operational Plan. He also authored more than 60 Congressional testimony papers for COMSTRAT. In 2001, LCDR McClain took his first 1637 FTS Naval Reserve Management job at NAS FT Worth JRB, TX as the Operations Officer at Reserve Intelligence Area SIX.

ted Command. His JRIC was also chosen as the JRIC of the Year for the calendar year 2003. LCDR McClain also completed his Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator and Engineer certifications while at FT Worth.
In January 2005, LCDR McClain transferred to Joint Intelligence Center, Pacific, HI to report as the Operational Support Officer, his second 1637 FTS tour. LCDR McClain was instrumental in reshaping the PACOM Reserve manning to bring it inline with the CNO's Human Capital Strategy. Due to his extensive human resource experience LCDR McClain redesignated during this tour to the Human Resource/Information Technology Community.
In January 2008, LCDR McClain transferred to NAS Jacksonville to serve as the Operations Officer at Reserve Intelligence Area Southeast-Jacksonville. In Jan 2009, LCDR McClain transferred to Navy Recruiting District Jacksonville to serve as the Operations Officer and Officer Programs Officer. At NRD Jax he was responsible for over 37 recruiting stations across Florida and Georgia. In late 2011 LCDR McClain retired From the US Navy to accept a rare opportunity to manage a large scrap yard and get into the steel business. In 2013 he accepted an opportunity to work for the second largest steel company in the world, Gerdau as their regional process improvement manager and later the corporate environmental, safety, and health manager responsible for 15 scrapyards and conducted regulatory audits across both the scrap yards and numerous steel plants in Canada and the US. This responsibility kept him on travel almost constantly. Then in 2o17 he accepted an opportunity as the EHS Manager for the largest window plant in the US and an adjacent extrusion plant. In 2018 he had an opportunity he accepted as the Regulatory Affairs Manager for a large chemical distributor with 5 facilities in four states.
He enjoys fishing, camping, home improvement projects, working on his truck, hiking, and just plain taking time to stop and thank God for everything.
LCDR McClain has four children, three boys and a daughter. LCDR McClain's personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Commendation Medal (with one oak leaf cluster), Navy Commendation (with one gold star), Joint Service Achievement Medal (with two oak leaf cluster), and the Navy Achievement medal (with two gold stars).
I wish all from my high school class a wonderful and blessed life. Geneseo was a wonderful place to grow up and I learned important values there, the most important is to be God fearing. Take time to pray and have that personal relationship with God.
