Timothy's Story
Life
Hello to all on Oct. 27, 2025! Where to start? Life just moves along, doesn't it? Childhood seems like yesterday but at the same time, it is a lifetime ago. I grew up in two great Livonia neighborhoods and I wouldn’t trade my childhood for anything, except for maybe my parents staying together and not divorcing when I was 7. After graduating from high school, I took a little time off and relaxed, drank a little and played LOTS of softball (and euchre lol) that summer. Then I decided that it was time to do something, so I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in the summer of 1984.
After going through basic training and tech school I was sent to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas NV. I married in October 1986 and my daugher was born in Las Vegas in July 1987. I met the most wonderful friends in the military, a few are even still some of my closest friends to this day. Finally moved back "home" to Las Vegas, NV in late 2004. I can still be seen indulging in one of my favorite hobbies, blackjack and craps. Will play in any craps or blackjack tournament you throw at me. Currently doing great, loving my work life and home life, so much to do in Las Vegas, not to mention the best weather in the country.
A job transfer brought me to the Nashville TN area in the summer of 2011, where I still am today. Retired from the U.S. Postal Service in May 2022 after 32 1/2 years. Couldn’t stand being retired so I went back to work shortly thereafter (but only part time).
Health has been holding up pretty decent. We have had some blips here and there but nothing serious. Have had a couple of cancer scares but we survived both and we are still cancer free to this day.
Everything else is going well and humming along. The only thing missing would be for some of my old schoolmates and military friends to be back in my life. I miss my friends from my school/military days and would welcome and love any contact. Thanks for stopping by and I hope to hear from you soon.
School
Ah school days.....from the first day at Botsford Elementary in 1970 to the last day at Bentley High in 1983, what a time and what memories. I was fortunate to grow up at a time when the world wasn't so fast paced and violent. Everyone's mom was still at home all the time. Going to the principal's office was NOTHING compared to what you faced at home. Never had to worry about metal detectors or the like. Getting caught with a weapon in school meant a slingshot or something like that. We didn't have the Internet then (which is a pro AND con). No computers in school or cable TV for that matter, still had penny candy. I think I was the last age group to come thru and experience penny candy. I think the thing I remember most about school was that all my male teachers wore ties and the lady teachers always seemed to have their hair done and wore heels all the time. I don't seem to see that today. Many summer days spent at the city pool next to my grade school catching up with friends, diving off the diving boards and splashing the lifeguards and afterwards, going down to the creek and catching frogs or fish. Livonia was a very nice community to grow up in (still is as I settled there for a while) and very safe. Never had to worry about pedophiles or any of the bad stuff of today. How many times we played whatever sport corresponded to the season during recess or after school? Baseball games in spring and summer, football games in fall and hockey games in winter. t you getting good grades and the strangest thing was that if you didn't do good, they would actually keep you back a grade, try seeing that today. The 1970s were a great time to grow up. That was probably the last "innocent" decade before the drugs and gangs and rap music screwed everything up for the kids of today. Workplace
After graduation, I started installing carpeting and linoleum with my uncle. After a couple of months I went into the Air Force and after boot camp and job training I ended up with a schedule that didn't represent the military. I worked Monday thru Friday from 7:30AM until 4:30PM and had weekends off, it was great! I saw many, many places and experienced many things during my Air Force career. After leaving the Air Force, I was fortunate and quickly found employment staying in the government, first working the midnight shift. Let me say, it takes a special animal to work the midnight shift and I'm not that animal. After midnights (which I hated), I went to the afternoon shift. Much better schedule and I again, had weekends off. After afternoons, I finally went to the day shift. I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in late 2004. I truly love my job and can't imagine doing any other job in the world. There are days when it's trying but I have other days that can cheer me too. The U.S. Government has been very good to me and given me a wonderful life and I thank the good Lord everyday for providing this job to me. Finally was able to retire in May 2022.
Military
Basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. Two words come to mind, humidity and sweat. Of course, good memories tho. I was a road guard in boot camp, which meant as we marched wherever we were going (everywhere), I had to run ahead of everyone and stand in the road and stop traffic so the rest of our flight could march onward. Talk about sweating, losing weight and getting fit, wow. As boot camp gave way to tech school at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi I began to get accustomed to the "real" Air Force which didn't come until after tech school. Still had to march everywhere I wanted to go as I had no car there. Great memories of parties on the weekends and trips to New Orleans and Pensacola to relax. After tech school, I was fortunate enough to be put in Las Vegas at Nellis AFB as my first assignment in the real Air Force. Let me tell you, as a young man put in Las Vegas after never experiencing it before is an experience in itself. Made lots of friends in the military and most of my friends I made I'll never forget. Where are you Lisa Coker, Rich Poore, Winston Ashford, Jeff Cole and Bryan Grega? Remember building those bombs and then blowing them up in the desert? Jeff and Bryan, remember going to the sportsbook at Caesars Palace to watch the 1987 AFC Championship Game only to watch your Browns lose to the Broncos on Byner's fumble near the goal line toward the end of the game? I can still see you eating those Milk Bones like you were in the Dawg Pound in Cleveland. Remember what we did to that VW Beetle in the Caesars Palace parking lot after the game when we were all so drunk? I bet Winston remembers, God what a fun day. I've had many thoughts about them, wondering where they are and what they're doing. I feel the military did me a lot of good and taught me a lot of things and I recommend it for anyone. Even if for two years, you'll gain alot of knowledge and learn a lot of things that you'll take into your adult life with you.
