Timothy's Story
Life
I'm a retired church musician living in Waynesville, NC. I'm married with one daughter, and two grandchildren - all of whom live nearby. I'm an avid hiker, and love exploring new trails. I have been section hiking the Appalachian trail for many years, and hope to complete it soon. I welcome the opportunity to reconnect with classmates, or anyone who shares some experiences.
School
My band director, Mr. Svec, was a great inspiration. I probably would not have gone into music were it not for him. All my 'band buddies' were a little 'crazy'. I remember a group of us ran for SCA offices on a 'non-traditional', 'non-conformist' platform. I was the only one of the bunch that came close to winning (treasurer). I have no idea what I would have done had I actually won!
As a hormone crazed teen, I had frequent crushes, most of which were never realized. I was far too shy at the time to even speak to a girl, much less ask them out. I had a good HS experience, and the memories become more important as the years fly by.
College
I was a Music Education major, but changed my mind about teaching my senior year. I remember playing some great concerts with the VU orchestra, including the concerto competition my sophomore and senior years.
I pulled a few all nighters, and got coffee at the Donut Hut across from my dorm.

izzard of '78. The next day, every car in the parking lot was completely covered, and the school closed for three days!!
Workplace
I worked for a distributorship in Roanoke for a year right after college. During that time, I was a trombonist with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, and the Southwest Virginia Opera Company.
I enlisted in the Air Force, spent five and a half years in three bands. I went to graduate school in church music, and have worked in Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran, Disciples of Christ, and American Baptist churches. I retired at the end of 2019, after serving 24 years as Music Director at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, SC. I moved to Waynesville, NC, in January of 2020 with my wife and parents, who lived in an apartment below us. My dad passed away in July 2022, and my mom is now in assisted living. My daughter, Josie, and two grandchildren now live in the appartment part time, which is nice. I remain in my church, and continue to play trombone with three different ensembles.
Military
I spent five years in the US Air Force band. I was in the Glenn Miller band in Europe for three years. That was a great experience. I toured all over western Europe. I remember the spades tournaments we had on the bus. Being of Norwegian descent, I was teamed with a flute player also of Norwegian descent. We were known as the "Norse Force"!
