Thom's Story
Life
I live in the Chicago area. Always a lot to do here.
Most days, I cycle to and from work. It is a 20 mile round trip. Not as much unicycling as I did in college... not practical anymore. (Was it ever? No, but it's fun.)
I am a certified hang glider pilot and I fly whenever I can.
I still enjoy rock climbing, and do so both outdoors and in climbing gyms.
I snowboard when I get the chance to. My most recent trip was Jan 2005, to Whistler / Blackcomb in Vancouver, BC... went with Chris, my best friend from high school.
Dating someone for two years now, as of March 2005. She has a cat, so I guess I have a pet by proxy.
Google 'unithom' for more.
Workplace
I worked during college (U of M, Ann Arbor) in the Advanced Visualization Lab (when I was into 3D computer graphics) and also the Media conversion facility, which were later located in the Media Union building.
I student-taught and assisted teaching of some classes, primarily having to do with Macromed...Expand for more
ia Director.
I was hired in 1998 by the CATS office of the School of Social work to build them an entryway kiosk system, using Director.
I was hired away in 1999 by Professor Perry Samson (Meteorology) who was creating a new startup company called LivingText, LLC. I was a lead developer there, both in Lingo/Director and PHP/MySQL websites. I worked there (in Ann Arbor) until the company tanked in mid-2001.
Then September 11 happened. My girlfriend at the time had already moved to Chicago to go to law school. So I interviewed at a few places, but no luck, nobody was hiring. Moved there anyway in November 2001.
Took hang gliding lessons in the spring of 2002 and got my pilot's rating. Worked part-time doing burglar / fire / intercom installation work, to pay the bills.
Got my present job in August 2002 at the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum in Chicago, IL. I am an exhibit programmer, systems engineer and provide high-level technical support to the staff.
