Tom's Story

Life Since my father died this summer, I have spent some time reflecting on his life, on my life, and on the mortality of us all. Who is still out there? What built your life? What drove your journey? Lately I have been thinking a lot of these John Lennon lyrics: There are places I'll remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places had their moments With lovers and friends, I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life, I've loved them all I've concluded that in my life there are many blessings--most of them beyond all dreaming--nearly all of them by grace alone. Among those blessings I count my memories of Pocahontas County and her people; the indelible memories of GBHS; the vivid memories of you. School I had a few crushes, I guess. Most of you know who you are. One thing I must say: we had more beautiful girls in our little GBHS Class of '67 than I have seen anywhere, ever since. I spent a lot of years (more than most) "going to school." But of all the teachers I have known anywhere, there were many at GBHS who stand out in every way. Mr. Harris and his team truly did provide me with the building blocks ... stepping stones ... whatever you want to call them ... that have gotten me this far in life. Warren Blackhurst; Allen Stewart; June Riley; Minnie Parg; Harold Crist (and, of course, his father! if you were lucky enough to attend 7th-8th at Green Bank) -- these people loved us. Well, maybe they loved you more than they loved me, because in high school I was sort of a "problem." Con...Expand for more
duct was not one of my better subjects (this always came up at report-card time). College I went to Hope College (see 'military' above). Nobody who goes to Hope College is ever the same again. Then I got married for the first time and moved to Colorado, where I almost got a Ph.D. in Classical Philology. It doesn't matter whether you know what that is or not; I've never really used that education. Strangely though, I dont regret having spent the time with that. Since leaving graduate school I have done the rest of my stuff in life (see 'workplace' above). Workplace I have worked at every job everywhere, doing everything. With varying degrees of success. You name it, I've done it. I can explain--in part--how to do most jobs. In some of my employment I have learned astounding things. And ordinary things too. I thought I might, but I never really amounted to much. Of course, there's always next year. Military I went to college because I wanted to; not because of the Vietnam war. It was just a coincidence that undergraduates were deferred. My roommate and I were in the first Nixon draft lottery, and watched it together on television. I got something like 296 and have been poor ever since. My roomate got a 5 or 6, I think. The next morning he went uptown and enlisted in the U.S. Army. They let him finish college, then paid for him to get Ph.D.'s in Math and Psychology, then commissioned him as a Captain. He "retired" several years ago, and has lived all over the world. He is currently a college professor in Singapore. Oh, by the way ... I was never in the military.
