Tom has accomplished surprisingly little in the last thirty five years, considering the vast opportunities accorded him. The sound of the surf has always been too alluring for him to resist, and oh yeah, those umbrella drinks. He's made a modest living selling T-shirts to tourists and giving bogus tours to out-of-towners who wouldn't know whether or not Vasco da Gama ever really set foot on that very spot. "The better the story, the better the tips", that's been Tom's mantra. Not that he's a chronic liar; the truth just isn't that interesting. Well, maybe he is a chronic liar. His fixation on leisure was momentarily broken when he caught a brief glimpse of the most beautiful sight he had ever laid eyes upon. Had the surf not been so poor that day, he might have missed it. But fate had determined that he would see her at that moment. Her air of indifference towards him only made the attraction that much stronger.
