Tom's Story
Becky and I have been married for over 30 years now and we have two wonderful children, Ryan and Chloe. We moved to Europe in 2006 and now reside about an hour south of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Ryan and Chloe still leave in Seattle, and we manage to see them regularly. Chloe (29) is married to Tom Hollatz and they live in Woodinville. Ryan (30) has a girlfriend and lives in Maple Valley.
I work for PACCAR (a great company by the way) and accepted a European assignment. We will probably move back to the states in 2010 or 2011. We have taken the opportunity to travel extensively while we are here, and although the list of places we have visited is getting long, we have many more places we hope to see over the next few years. We have also enjoyed many wonderful visits from friends and family.
This year, my job has taken me to several eastern European destinations including Moscow, the Ukraine, Belarus, Budapest and Romania. Last year I had the opportunity to make trips to Asia and India. It is a very interesting world and I have been fortunate to see and experience so much.
The Netherlands is probably one of the easiest countries for an American to navigate, as most people here speak English very well. We have learned many Dutch words and p...Expand for more
hrases, which are frequently useful, but for the most part English works well. If we were living in Germany, France, Spain or Italy, learning the local language would almost be mandatory.
Holland is a country filled with bicycles. We have two and although Becky isn't an avid biker, I manage to get out and cycle around the countryside occassionally.
I currently serve on the Board of Directors at ISLA in Germany (a non-profit verain) and I also continue to serve on the Board of Governors for City University of Seattle. I served as their Chairman of the Board for the past two years. This year I attended graduation at City U's European campus in Bratislava, Slovakia.
It is always a wonderful experience to share in the joy of both graduates and their families at graduation time. I believe this is even more true however, in a country such as Slovakia where earning a college degree is even more of an accomplishment. I attended City U's graduation ceremony in Beijing a few year's ago and had the same experience.
These experiences continue to underscore how fortunate I have been in my life and how fortunate I have been to experience the passion and dedication that so many people have throughout the world...to improve their lives.
Life has been good.
