Tom's Story
Life
October 2009 - this is the first update since May. I was hit while driving through an intersection on a green light. My car was gone and I am still recovering from a concussion. It is ironic that our second drug, still in discovery stage, should be for traumatic brain injury and stroke. I hope that we can develop the drug for the Army. But I never realized how serious and intrusive a concussion can be, how long it hangs on.
I had a wonderful 4 days back to Hamilton College in the beginning of June for my 40th reunion. I neve imagined that I would be there, much less a speaker about my company's work in developing a new drug for Alzheimer's at an Alumni College presentation. It was wonderful to renew friendships, and by now all of us are far past any petty differences so there was a real community spirit. I am very proud to have worked on the organizing committee for our year. Steve Knapp also spoke and we gifted to Hamilton one of Steve's Light Sculptures. Look them up; they are amazing.
I founded Edunn Biotechnology, in St. Louis, to develop what I and my medical school research friends think is the best drug for Alzheimer's disease. We have made progress, and in January we won an award from the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation
I could have done with a little less prestige and a lot more money, but not my call. The economic chaos has made it impossible to raise funds but a lot of work has given us an opportunity to get some serious support from the National Institutes of Health. My fingers are crossed until next January through March.
If you have questions, send an email. Otherwise, still single, but hey, I can cook. I see John Drobak at a restaurant, speak with Judi Schubmehl regularly, and talk ...Expand for more
with Giles Hoyt in Indianapolis, and Natalie Schad, in Toronto.
My son Jeff is a sophomore transfer to SUNY New Paltz. Alison, my daughter, graduated from law school, U. Minnesota, married her long time boyfriend, passed the bar, took a job, and bought a house in St. Paul.
I travel much less now, but I do not want to go back to the trans-Atlantic schedule - 11 trips of 1 day to 3 weeks in just 1993 alone. Last December I gave an invited talk at an Alzheimer's meeting in the Austrian Alps - they served coffee and pastries twice a day, but never the same pastry twice! Finally I had a chance to speak German! I enjoyed travel to the Philippines and to Korea and will go back when I am able.
When our schedules allow, I like to have dinner out with John Drobak and his family.
Enjoyed several years working between Nebraska and Belgium, with much travel in the UK and France. Because I speak German - thank you Herr Sprenger, of course my employers had me working in French speaking countries. What is important to me: health - physical and emotional, good work, and relationships of all kinds and degrees - family, especially children, loved ones, and above all friends to be treasured. I could have lost a child to cancer (Ali, 1996, alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma), and that changed everything - views are sharper, each day is to be lived, and light somehow is brighter. A close friend from college and graduate school died 3 years ago and I still feel the shock. Looking back, the make or break issues and attributes were the ability to sustain relationships, despite ups and downs. Oh yes, I will try again to correct that listing of me at Catholic Central..but I really did have a great interest over there. Hope to hear from all of you, Tom
