Hello to the Class of '59 -- and to everyone who worked at Kresge's back then. Remember Kresge's? Forty girls working on twenty counters with only two stockboys among them, one of whom was me. (Alas, without a clue.) Took me seven years and three universities to get my BA, which I finally did in 1966. (From Harvard Extension.) In those days I mostly hung around Boston and Cambridge. In the late Sixties I went to San Francisco as a grad student at the University of California, Berkeley. Saw a lot of California and a lot more of the country, bouncing back and forth between Boston and the Bay Area by bus, car, and plane for a couple of years. Came back to Boston for good in 1970, got married a year later, and then achieved maturity. (Or was it the other way around?) Our boys were born in '76 and '80. The younger one now lives in Los Angeles. For several years he was on a quest (with several friends) to see at least one game in every major league ballpark in the country. The older one resides in Seattle. He's a cartographer whose maps appear in travel guides and college geography textbooks. He took to maps when he was six! Before we had kids, we traveled through much of Western Europe. Since the kids left home, we've traveled more in the US, mainly in California and the Southwest, but also a 30th anniversary trip to Hawaii and a road trip from Boston to Missouri and back -- by way of Ontario! Nowadays we anchor most of our U.S. trips with visits to the boys. In 2014 we did the West Coast -- from Seattle to Portland to Napa to San Francisco to Los Angeles -- to see both of them in one trip. Other places we've been to recently are Orient Beach on St. Martin and Sweden and Norway. In Sweden a local woman helped us find the remains of the remote home that Linda's Swedish grandfather grew up in. We've visited Iceland twice, once after the trip to Scandinavia and once after a couple of weeks in Munich, Berlin, and Paris. We always travel on our own (no tours). My wife did take a tour of Ireland. I was invited but my traveling companions would have been my wife, her mother, two sisters-in-law, a sister-in-law's mother-in-law, and four -- or was it five? -- nieces. I declined. (Not enough estrogen.) The wildest time in our travels occurred on a lightning-heavy night In Death Valley, California.
