Tom's Story
Life
Greetings, all. After graduation, I attended Ohio State and graduated in 12/85 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. I accepted a position with Harris Corp. in Melbourne, FL and was there until 1995. In the meantime, I got my Masters in EE from FIT (1992), got married (1993), and had a son (Peter - 1995). In 1995 we moved to Duluth, GA (suburb of Atlanta), worked for a couple different companies (Arris Interactive, OSI), and now work for BellSouth. I've been involved in Software since HS, professionally since 1990. In 1996 we had a daughter (Olivia). In November 2000 we moved to Roswell, GA, about 10 miles West of Duluth. I'm still playing music - mostly for my church (I'm a Christian and attend a PCA Presbyterian Church) - in the form of drums, guitar, violin, and keyboards. My twin brother, Dan, lives in Aurora, Ohio, by the way. In case you are overly curious, feel free to visit my web home page on tomgeorges.com.
School
I really liked high school, even better than college. I mostly enjoyed being in all the musical groups (marching band, orchestra, stage band, etc.). And I had a group of friends with whom I still keep in contact and try to see whenever I get back to Ohio. I enjoyed teachers, too - notably, Mr. Eich, Mrs. Herron, Mr. Roytz, and Mr. Bell. At Lowden, Mrs. Ordy influenced me very positively to strive for excellence. Brush prepared me very well for college, too.
College
I loved Ohio State. The Saturday football games were the most memorable times, along with my involvement with OSU Bible Studies. ...Expand for more
I gained a stronger commitment to my faith while at OSU and read the Bible whenever I had the chance. I also have great memories of cheap pizza places, the gyro place on High St., University Band, "South Pacific", Ohio Union, sunny afternoons listening to crazy campus preachers on the Oval, playing racquetball at Larkins, studying at the Medical Library, and living at Smith Hall for 4 years. One of the most memorable experiences was when I was invited up to Orton Hall bell tower with the bell player (not Quasimodo) to see the chimes played. The guy was named Tom Buffer and he was phenomenal with all those levers.
Workplace
Here's a brief history of my post-college work experience:
1986-1988 Harris Corp. (Engineer)
1988-1990 FIT grad student (TA)
1989 - Pizza Hut (cook)
1990-1995 Harris Corp. (Software)
1995-1997 Arris (Software)
1997-1998 OSI (Professional Svcs)
1998-present BellSouth (Software)
In 1998 I lost my job at Harris and immediately began my masters at FIT, where I worked as a TA for extra income. After about a year I needed to take a part-time job at Pizza Hut, leveraging my Geraci's experience. I was then re-hired by Harris, but this time as a software engineer - self taught. This career has proved to be the ticket. At Harris, I specialized in Database, GUI, and SNMP, which still serves me well today. In fall of 1995, me and my family (including a 5 month-old Peter Georges) moved to the Atlanta area, which has turned out to be a great career move and a great place to live. I've now been at BellSouth nearly 5 years.
