Tom's Story
Life
After high school I enlisted in the Army and served as a military policeman stationed in Europe. After about a year of writing traffic tickets and investigating traffic accidents I lucked out and was selected for duty in Brussels, Belgium. Brussels was Great! Duty for the most part was very light and provided the opportunity to travel on my days off. I had the chance to travel through out most of Western Europe.
After my Army time was up, I returned home to Seattle to take advantage of the GI Bill - I was having a great time being a college student when in my second year I met a young lady (Trisha) who would eventually become my wife.
While the GI Bill would pay for my tuition and books I still had to pay my living expenses. I worked various part-time jobs while keeping my position on the Dean's list. Jobs included operating a printing press, lumber-jack, house painting and a couple accounting clerk positions. I picked up a temporary summer position with a brokerage firm between my sophomore and junior year that would turn into a 10 year engagement. My plans to finish college would be put on hold for a few years.
In August 1983 Trish and I were married just in time to be transferred to Anchorage, Alaska. I would relocate and spend my first 4 months of married life living 1500 miles from my wife while she finished up college in Seattle. For the next five years Trish and I were both busy pursuing our careers and attending night school and enjoying the freedom to travel the world. Trish was working in the Airline ind...Expand for more
ustry and flight benefits were wonderful.
Well, there comes a time in every man's life when he has to grow up and that time came for me in July of 1988 when I became the proud father of wonderful little girl - Kathleen Elizabeth.
Life continued and I did finally complete my BA and with a couple of job changes and relocations we finally landed back in the Seattle area (Issaquah) in 1995.
Much of our social life seems to revolve around family dinners, Girl Scout meetings, School functions and the like, but as a family we enjoy down hill skiing in the winter and boating in the San Juan islands in the summer. I am an avid sailor and enjoy any opportunity to be on the water under sail.
Currently, I am employed with a small software company as their director of sales and marketing. We produce cost accounting software - this fits in well with my Accounting degree and my many years of marketing for fortune 500 companies. I am enjoying working for a small company - while the money is not nearly as good - I have greater control on the success of the organization and I get to spend more time at home with the family.
In my spare time I guest lecturer at Seattle University and Central Washington University on Sales Force Management and teach technology classes at Bellevue Community College.
Well, time moves on...in 2020 Trish and I retired we now live full-time in our RV and travel exploring north America. We have been to to 49 states plus most of Eastern Canada. We winter in Yuma Arizona but spend the majority of the year traveling.
