Tom's Story

Life Since graduating from San Luis Obispo High School in 1966 I've served in the service, married, earned a college degree at UCSC, earned a master's degree in Education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, spent 5.5 years in Germany, and participated in Family reunions -- some through the Haskell Family Association in both the U.S. and England. I've worked for the last 27 years at Buena Vista University at the Council Bluffs Center and have two children who are also college graduates. I enjoyed my 40th reunion and seeing classmates in 2006. Since I reside in Omaha, Nebraska, I'm somewhat removed from where I graduated, but it's fun to go back to San Luis Obispo and see the changes. My parents have also left the area for Newport, Oregon, which is a great area, too. Other interests include life-long learning, genealogy, enjoying our cats and our rat terrier, photography (Webshots at haskelloma), and trying to stay relatively healthy. Our rat terrier enjoys long walks which have been good for me. Still play the piano and like to read. I teach government, geography, and education classes. I receive the greatest satisfaction from watching others succeed and watching them engage in meaningful activities. While you're welcome to look at my profile, I think a lot of the questions could have more answers than the choices to which we are limited. For example, my ideal vacation...Expand for more
does not match any of the choices -- I like vacations where you get to see new places, learn some history, walk, observe, and for at least part of the vacation have a couple of unstructured days. I do not mind rain on vacations, unless it hangs on and on. Courtesy of Buena Vista University I participated in a dream "vacation" (an academic as well as a pleasurable trip) to Buenos Aires, Argentina and Peru where I saw Machu Picchu. Seeing Machu Picchu has been a wish since childhood and this was my first trip to South America. Since I wrote this in 2006 a few things have happened. Just tonight 7/7/2010 I saw my freshman year yearbook from Catalina High School in Tucson, Arizona. I had all three yearbooks from San Luis Obispo, but not this one. 1963 -- let's see, only 47 years ago -- no wonder I looked as if I were in junior high rather than high school. (You can't put website links in your stories. I wanted to share the yearbook link.) How could I look like that as a freshman and then graduate from college 7 years later? Went to the 40th University of California get-together this past April and even though the class reunions are only lightly organized it was fun seeing classmates from 1970. Enjoy travel and getting to the mountains and ocean. It's hard to believe that I've been in Nebraska for over 30 years. It's nice to be centrally located but sometimes miss the mountains.
