Tom's Story
I grew up in Albuquerque (Montezuma, Jefferson, Highland), but moved to Boulder, CO for my senior year. The timing of the move usually drew sympathetic groans, but was actually a terrific move for me and my family. The fact that my dad was the new, well-received principal at Boulder High actually sped my acceptance and acclimation.
A stab at college in Nebraska didn't work out so well...not sure if it was Nebraska or college that didn't sit well with me at the time. Giving up my student deferment, enabled the draft to dictate my next chapter...3 1/2 years in Key West, FL with Uncle Sam. I've always seemed to find the silver lining wherever I've been, so still have lifelong friends from both Key West and the Navy.
Went back to school in Spokane, WA and got my degree in Theater and Communications. Was married after my jr. year to Cindy Hauser, a friend from high school youth group at our church in Boulder, but not a high school sweetheart.
After a stint with the Lamb's Players, a touring Christian theater arts company out of San Diego, we returned to Boulder for Cindy's grad school at CU. I still had GI Bill left, so ended up getting my MA in Counseling at CU while she got hers in Theater. Somehow we m...Expand for more
anaged to have a couple of kids along the way.
I was following my lifelong dream of pursuing a law degree when Cindy went on a cold call audition for Disney in Denver. I ended up quitting CU law school to support her in her acting career at Walt Disney World and, though she moved on to a career in teaching, 30 years later I'm the one who had a career there. I retired at the end of March,2020 (Entertainment Mgr.), about the same time the company shut down for Covid 19. I guess I'm living proof that, indeed, timing is everything in entertainment! After boot camp in Orlando, I swore I'd never be back, but now it's home. Our hearts are still in the West, though, so retirement may draw us there yet.
Our 2 kids are grown and thru college. Nikolas is living in Seattle, WA and working in the airline industry. Brittany is in New Zealand, finishing her PhD in Linguistics with her family born out of her adventures in Vanuatu. I see retirement travels in our future!
A lot of high school seemed like trying to ride a skateboard on ice, but somehow it became a transformative experience we all negotiated. I treasure the memories and look forward to reconnecting with classmates from both Albuquerque and Boulder.
