Tom's Story
After graduating from Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL, I went on to study Industrial Engineering at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. Shortly before graduating the Viet Nam war ended which changed my 5 year service commitment to 3 months active duty and 8 years reserve. Since I had thought that I was guaranteed a job for 5 years, I made no direct career plans beyond that. However, through a college teammate I fell into a job teaching and coaching at Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ. I immediately loved both teaching and coaching and I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my career doing it. After 10 years at Blair I went back to my alma mater, Lehigh, to be an assistant wrestling coach. After 6 years as assistant I became the head coach. I loved this job too, but I also knew that I didn't want to be traveling around the country recruiting when I was in my 50s, so I left for a public school teaching and coaching job at Warren Hills, NJ. I liked this job, but after 2 years there were cuts to the faculty. The union rules required last in first out. I wasn't laid off, but I...Expand for more
was next in line and was told it would be risky the following year. I took a job at Allen High School in Allentown, PA in the middle of that summer. however, I was completely shocked the first day of school. It was just like the movie "Stand and Deliver". It was completely out of control. I actually liked the kids, but there was no discipline. Most the teachers had found ways to cope, but very little teaching was being done. After a very long year I moved back to prep school and went to The Hill School in Pottstown, PA. After a year at Allen my first class at Hill was quite a surprise. Most the students came up to me to introduce themselves and shake hands as they entered the room. I taught Physics and some math and was assistant wrestling coach at Hill for 17 years before retiring. I'm now living in a small town about an hour north of Philadelphia on the west side of the Lehigh Valley. BTW I still enjoy coaching wrestling for the local team.
My wife is Mary who is a professor at Penn State. We met at a local tennis club. Our son Jak is in his third year at Penn State.
