Tom's Story
After high school I took tool and die drafting at a technical school. After school I got a job at Independent Engineering Co. Sitting at a drawing board all day wasn't my thing so I quit and went back to school. Went to Electronics institute for about 6 weeks and got my notice to have a military physical for the draft and passed it. Instead of the Army I joined the Navy. Left for boot camp June 24, 1969, and got orders to the aircraft carrier Shangri-La CVA-38 in Sept. Went to the Vietnam area and afterward helped decommission the Shangri-La. My job on the ship was air conditioning, refrigeration, and steam heat. Got orders to go to air conditioning and refrigeration school in Norfolk, VA in July 1972 then orders to the guided-missile destroyer USS Conyngham DDG-17 in Sept in which my duties were the same. I made a Mediterranean cruise and a North Atlantic cruise on this ship. All the cruises were great but the one was getting to ride the train to Rome and taking a tour of Rome and the Vatican. At the Vatican was able to go inside St Peters Cathedral Pope Paul VI was addressing the US Navy and the visiting ships. It will be remembered forever. Was discharged on March 2, 1973. Went on to work in the A/C industry and got in the Pipefitters Union 533 May of 1976. Went...Expand for more
on being single took dance lessons and got married in Sept 1990 to AnnaRose. On February 7, 1999, our son David was born in which I was two months away from being 50. We have a house on 5 acres in Lee's Summit and believe me it keeps me busy. We have two goldfish ponds with a stream that connects the upper to the lower one.
In 1985 I started a part-time sharpening business. I mainly specialize in cold saw blades but will sharpen chain saws and lawn mower blades. In 2010 I took a job driving a school bus for Lee's Summit School District. I drove for over 3 years then decided I had enough. I retired from school bus driving Sept 2014 and now enjoying my free time. The free time didn't last long and got a job at Walmart being an assembler September 2, 2018, to Jan 2020. Had to buy a new used truck and want to get it paid off quickly so this is the result. On May 15.2019 I was chosen to go on the honor flight of Kansas City to Washington D.C. This will forever be remembered. The day was just incredible with seeing all the memorials, Iwo Jima and the changing of the guard at Arlington Cemetery. The reunions have been great to reminisce with classmates and share different things past and present. At times I think about the good times I had at Bishop Hogan High.
