Tom's Story
After HS had a string of unfulfilling low-paying jobs. Moved to California, went to Callison College, studied language, culture, politics and pottery in Japan for a year. Transferred to UCSC, got interested in Anthropology and did real well. Married Shari Johnston in '84, changed my last name to Johnston-O'Neill. Went to Princeton for graduate school in anthropology. Spent 3 amazing years in Sumatra, Indonesian living amongst progressive Muslims who were awesomely nice to us. Wrote an impossibly long dissertation about cultural history of the small but important village of Kamang. After many years of toil I got a Ph.D., which is, I suppose, rather remarkable considering how horrible of a HS student I was! Begat Emily (oh yeah, Shari had something to do with that) who double majored in Ballet and Anthropology with a focus on archaeology. She is now living in Northern NY and is an environmental specialist. After Princeton I moved ...Expand for more
to San Diego, and founded The Worldview Press, a nonprofit educational organization that promote greater cross-cultural awareness, understanding and engagement. In 2009 we changed the name to the Worldview Project to embrace a wider range of activities and initiatives.. So if, unlike me, have made a zillion dollars after high school and are looking for some worthy org to donate to . . ) I get to spend lots of time around folks who hail from all over the world, it's nothing short of wonderful. I have extremely fond memories of many of the folks I went to HS with and it's great re-connecting. I still play guitar, go to a lot of Jazz gigs, help produce World Music concerts occasionally go camping and sailing, travel whenever I get the chance. Enjoy ambiguity, don't read as much as I'd like to, cook lots and lots (mostly Asian and Indian) and still stay up way too late. Still two steps left of liberal. As my daughter says. "Peace Out"
