Tom's Story
Workplace
I am a foreman of Marine Aids Electrical Technicians with the Canadian Coast Guard in Dartmouth. We do electrical and solar work on lighthouses and other marine aids like foghorns, range lights, buoys, etc. around the Nova Scotia coast primarily. We look after most of Nova Scotia from Liverpool right around the coast of Cape Breton up to Pugwash and now assist in the rest of the Maritimes. We travel by truck, ship or helicopter, whatever it takes to get us to our destination.
Sable Island is my favorite place to go because it has not been spoiled by the greed and technology of humans. Most everything there is as nature intended. It is going to be a place of drastic change in the future however, as global warming becomes a reality.
There are approximately 350 horses on Sable Island in 2011 and almost 170,000 seals as well. Everywhere you look you can see a herd, sometimes up to a half kilometer long. One never knows how to dress out there because you can leave the West Light ...Expand for more
and travel along the beach on the north side and be comfortable with fall clothing but then if you go up past the East light abut ten kilometers away and come through to the south side where the surf is the most powerful and the fog and mist chills your bones, winter clothing is more comfortable. There is nothing like driving an ATV along twenty kilometers of beach and basically traveling through three seasons all in the same day. We have to be very cautious all the time so that we do not disturb anything, including the maram grass that the horses eat. That is their primary food out there and anything else fed to them by humans could kill them. Their digestive systems are not used to eating anything that we eat, including carrots and apples.
Someday soon, I hope to start work on a book I want to publish containing a couple of hundred best photos of the hundreds I have taken on Sable Island over the years. It will show Sable Island as it really is with pictures people have never seen before publicly.
