Tom's Story
What have you all been up to?
The guy you knew in 1961 through 1963 went through some very significant changes during the past 40+ years.
After leaving Borromeo I attended St. Edward High School and then entered college thinking I wanted to be a Chem Engineer.I ended up in Columbus studying Accounting and business and received my BS in 1971 and MBA in 1977. I was licensed by the state of Ohio as a CPA in 1982. While in college in Cleveland, alcohol and partying sort of got in the way of academics. When I moved to Columbus I quit drinking and pretty much threw everything in to studies and my career. I met my wife in 1972 and sse helped me down the road to return to my catholic roots. I hadn't quit the Church but didn't practice my faith very well. She encouraged me to come to church with her and set me on the right path. One month after we were married, I attended a Cursillo weekend and it all came in to a proper perspective. You know the vocation that I thought I had to become a priest back in 1961 was actually a call to serve in the permanent diaconate here in Atlanta. I took a while what with career and raising a family, but in 1987 I was ordained to the permanent diaconate for...Expand for more
the Archdiocese of Atlanta. I served under Archbishop Lyke while he was our Archbishop. I really admired him, perhaps it was the Franciscan in him.
In 1989 I lost my job and was unemployed for 4 years, from the top of the world to the pits, but my faith never waivered. I was faithful to God and he watched over us.
in 1998 I started working on an MTS (Theol. Studies. I found the field of ethics, particularly social ethics in credibly interesting. At the same time the Scriptures were opening up to me. I wish that I had been given a gift of languages but God didn't bless me with that gift. (that's why I left BHS)Scriptures would be so much more fufilling if I could read the Hebrew and Greek. This is starting to ramble and so I'll quit here with this: God, Family and Work are my biggest joys. I find the work in the diaconate very fulfilling yet challenging. To be God's instrument of evangelization through living the gospel as a Secular Franciscan has been most rewarding, yet at the same time very humbling.
My family includes my wife, Lori, my children Katie, Megan, Sara, and Brendan and my grand daughter Catriana. I have two boxers, Daisy and Loki.
I'll continue this story later.
