Tom's Story
OLD PHOTO at about 14 going to Balance Rock for the weekend. The success and Yankees photo are from Vegas photo booth( as a kid always dreamed of being a Yankee like most from oklahoma); They are just for fun too. EMAIL ME AND TELL ME what you remember about me and what we did that might make me laugh.....I will put the best on the site............I have made contact with over 300 people on this site from all over. IT WORKS>
School:
went to Bakersfield College and recieved A.A. in Sociology and saw Job flyer on Board for Deputy Sheriff, took the test and worked there while going the Fresno State ext. Started and finished Cal-State Bakersfield. I still take seminars and classes I'm interested in, may help me when I grow up.....
LIFE: We lost our oldest son RYAN in 2001; to a combo of asthama, prescription drugs, injury and the wrong Doctor (she finally lost her lic. after 4 other deaths) The boys have picked up and dealt with it and helped us ; Acually probably better that Kandy and I. The boys are the most important thing in our lives. We enjoy wrestling (high school and college) and have set in bleachers for about 25 years watching ours and others. Kandy and I are still working full time, she at the Jewelry Store and I at YOUNG & NICHOLS. KANDY IS one of the those lucky persons who can design in her head and her jewelry is fabulous. Wesley is finishing at Fresno State, Sean graduated and is working on his teaching credential, and Shane went to Fresno state last year, but he transfered to Whittier College in LA to play college football and go to a smaller private school. We shall see.... Sean just bought a house on Enos lane which is a Horse property that needs a lot of work and they have three horse and dog from a shelter.
His Financee Katie is a great horsewoman and is certificated, an honors grad of Fresno State(where they met) and worked with Kandy in the Store. In June, She got hired at the TARGET SHIPPING CENTER in Shafter in management, good job Katie! Its only 4 Miles to work, you can't beat that. My Brother BILLY JOE from NORTH 1970, has grandkids already and helps take care of them with LAURA (WEDDING) SHEETS, their daughters are go getters( NHS TOO) and are Doing well. Shannon marrried ERIC BOREN from the other dale; ROSEDALE and he is a Doctor now just moving back to Bakersfield. (allergist)
Friends : Stay in touch with as many as possible through the web, reunions, committees and calls. Carole Fenderick Hearn is a Controller for a large law firm in San Francisco and has done really well and is married to a great guy. See some of our classmates around town and have talked with Gordon Ransom, Tom Apperson, Susan Bolyard, Ann McAffee, Vicky Honeycutt, Tom Birch, Dale Tedrow etc. Josie and Marilynn Mayes dropped by after reading the webb page, I was busy that day and missed having dinner, DAMN, they are so positive I needed the boast, For sure next time. Shirley PRIOR lives at the coast and we exhange j...Expand for more
okes and information..............Pam Markum Died, one of her best high school friends, stay healthy, at last count over 40 of our class has passed away. CARL SMITH just had lung surgery for cancer and will stop smoking, If you haven't do it now. I don't think life gets any easier and the world is really in trouble. Do what you can to save our planet for our grandchildren.
Politics: Most who know the adult me know I have remained a loyal moderate Democrat and work in a lot of political campaigns. HALL FOR MAYOR was my last campaign INTEREST (He won HUGE). Harvey and I have been friends since I was a Deputy in 1969. I support Congressman JIM COSTA who is a workaholic and trys to do the best job he can, I have worked with him for over 20 years and respect his dedication. On the envoirment; AL GORE IS TELLING THE TRUTH AND THE LAST 7 YEARS I think MORE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE. Do your part and remember the supreme court, global warming, the Irag war, public education and our standing in the world depend on your vote in November, make it count and we need a drastic change....so You know where I stand.
Law Enforcement: I remain a strong law enforcement supporter and belong to the Kern Law Enforcement Foundation. (see Walter Morton's Webb page hosted by David Rogers ; Kernlaw.org) on the webb. IT is our 20th anniversary and I am proud to be a charter member and past president. We are the most incarcerated society in the world, so just locking everyone up and throwing away the key is not the answer in about 35 to 45 % of the cases.........Corrections is now about 40 % of the State budget, and education continues to lose ground. Lock away predators and violent offenders, but we need to overhaul our prison system and incarceration, This is hard for me as a former officer, but my education and training tells me we have to change.
Life: Just finished the 6th Ryan Sheets Memorial arm wrestling tournament and we are over $50,000 in donations to Kern County Wrestling. My Brother, Alvin Cheek, Richard Toland, Stewart Townsend and Brian Banducci make up the board and have contributed hours to make this a sucess. We are moving next year to March or April to make it cooler and not conflict with the Lake Tahoe Tournament.
The Golden Years are going to be what we can make of them, stay active and involved. If you retire or quit working, volunteer you skills and knowledge, they are invaluable to to the next generation. Don't take your family for granted, I regret being so much of a work-a-holic.........Our generation did more good than bad, but we left some messes like the envoirment and war we need to clean up.....Do what you can. Love Life and those around you, they are the reason you live and love. Wish you all the very best in life and hope to hear from you soon.
As a child I remember hunting with the Etters and Irwins, got shot twice by David Etter and once by Bill. The neighborhood was full of friends who have done all right..... Glad I survived.
