Tom's Story

Life Hello Peoples, Finally opened a e-mail from classmates.com and for a discounted 10 bucks I thought I would update my file. We live in Spokane, (I tell people I made the "big move to the big city" :) since about 1984. My parents moved with us 5 kids to Cheney in 1965, on the west edge of town with a small airplane strip a half block away that is now the Salnave area covered with houses and a park. We moved from Portland where my brother Randall and I were born. My dad was a Professor of Geography/Earth Science from ’65 thru the new millennium at EWU. My mom was a nurse at Sacred Heart for many years. They both still live in Cheney. A few of you might be curious of my siblings that all went to Cheney High School soooo….my oldest sister Rhonda is a school teacher in Wenatchee, my sister Dianne is a Nurse in Spokane, my older brother Mark lives in Portland and was in the computer drafting field & “looking”, my younger brother Randall, the most famous of us all, was a school teacher and now is about to be hired on with Homeland Security. My wife and I have been in the Senior Assisted Living business since 1996. We generally have 12 residents and about 10 employees. Before that I was employed at Sacred Heart Medical Center for several years. 1988 was a roller coaster year. Took my first overseas trip with a team of Christian missionaries, diagnosed with cancer, six months of chemo, got married and lived to tell about it all. After years of being a “on and off” spiritual seeker of truth (since the 8th grade), in 1984 I finally settled down, convinced that the Bible is truly the Word of God, supernaturally put together. Being the son of a Scientist this didn’t happen overnight. In 1984 I moved to Texas and attended a short term Christian school that grounded me well and gave me a realistic world view on the needs in the world. I have since then taken several trips overseas helping with various projects and speaking in church or group settings. I lov...Expand for more
e it and could make a life of just doing that! Being a Christian means different things to different people. It comes down to Christ living in us and having that personal relationship with Him. It’s not about being religious, legalistic, boring or annoying. It is important to keep it real! The most recent project we have taken on is we purchased a corner building in downtown Cheney that housed a Christian bookstore for the last 22 years. We changed the name, painted in and out, put in a seating area, we serve coffee and provide wireless internet. It’s not a money making adventure but a continued outreach to the 10,000 Eastern students and the community. It’s going great! Never thought in a million years I would own a little part of Cheney where I used to ride my bike as a kid day after day. Our son is in Hawaii, attending the same type of school I did in ’84 and then he is off to Indonesia and Cambodia till March of ’08. Our daughter is a 8th grader at Northwest Christian Schools. She loves to sing, act, play volleyball and softball. She is always busy. Our son (graduated in 2007) was on NWC’s Basketball team that won back to back State B Championships. He also played in the number one position in tennis at a public high school his freshman thru his senior year. My wife and I love to go on road trips on my motorcycle. We went to Canada twice this last summer, and many day trips. She loves it almost more than me. My wife Mari is full of constant energy and there is never a dull moment. She is very personable, deep and humorous. If any of you have made it this far down this long winded story, I commend you. It would be great to hear from anyone of you, whether we knew each other well or not. Unfortunately, in Jr.and High school, I ignored most people, also at times my classes. I was not a big fan of school, but have some unforgettable great memories, K-12. Cheney was great to grow up in, may move back someday if I don't end up in Africa! Ha ha!
