Tom's Story
After high school, I worked for a few years at the Canadian Cellulose Company as a chemical solutions operator. I went to UBC in 1976/ and found out while I was there, that I wanted to be a carpenter. I subsequently attended a six-month pre-apprenticeship course at Northwest Community College in Terrace, BC.
I worked as a carpenter until joining the City of Prince Rupert as a building inspector in 1987. I subsequently moved to Nanaimo in early 1992 and worked my way up to the manager’s position in the Building Section. I retired in April of 2017.
I married Shauna Sinclair (also a Rupert girl) in 1984 and have two boys: Kevin who was born in 1986, and Eric who was born in 1989. Kevin graduated at the top of his class in Industrial Engineering at Dalhousie University in 2018 and currently works for Michelin in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. love, Jen, on January 4th,2020. Eric is a painter (not portraits or landscapes!) and works for a house painting company in Nanaimo.
Shauna also no longer works and we are both living the life of leisure. We normally take two tropical vacations a year (I just love beaches, palm trees, and cold drinks by the pool) and live in a wonderful spot in Nanaimo.
My parents are now deceased (no surprise) and my brother is now lost to me (big surprise).
I try to make it back to Prince Rupert for a week every year. It is still a wonderful town. I walk everywhere when I am there and still feel quite at home there after all these years. I regard myself as a Rupertite and not a Nanaimoite. I’m still pretty much the person that you knew back in high school.
I hope that everyone who reads my profile is doing well. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll meet up again someday. Cheers!
